What have you spent on your Z?

General Chat

Q:

Thought it would be interesting for everyone to share how much coin you have laid out for your beloved Z. Can be for anything, body work, mechanical work, sound system whatever... Just share what you've laid out for your beast.
I'm easily down about $15,000AU/11,000USD and worth every cent if you ask me! :)

Just recently passed the $6K mark, paid $900 for the car back in March. All I lack is the paint job and hope to have that completed by Spring. It is a daily driver so my return on investment has been very good (makes my daily commute worth looking forward to). Recently only driving the Z on the "purdy" days, since we have some occasional nasty winter here in Tn, but already looking forward to Spring and the fresh paint job to complete the project.
Expect to have about $9-10 K invested when finished. Time to start looking for the next one...................

I'm pushing about 12K+. I base that on the Mastercard I just paid off. I used the card just for the car and nothing else. I assume you meant cash output and not the 3,000 hours of labor. That would make it more.

then another 10K in engine/ trans/clutch/transmission/tires/interior etc.
Paint is gonna be another 8K
Turbo upgrade another 5K
LSD rear/cv axles/sx tranny swap/coilovers in January another 5K.
so maybe when all said and done probably 30K+
Oh, I forgot to ad in my wifes ring at $8K. Soon as she found out what the engine and related driveline stuff was $$ wise she wanted comparable compensation...I agreed. My wife is pretty good about all my toys and my sons so I am pretty lucky in that respect with that. she was the one who told me to go out and buy my Z06 Vette also. Gotta love her!

The only thing I havent done myself is weld the turbo flange on my downipie, I paid a shop 10 bucks to do that. COme to think of it I also had Majestic Turbo rebuild and upgrade my turbo. Well, my wife did find out after I crashed the first 240 and we were arguing with the insurance company over the value of the car. We ended up with the money we wanted but my wife didn't talk to me for weeks. good thing I didn't include the bill from Rebello!
The message everyone should take from this is simple and comes in two parts:
1) keep those receipts locked up, and
2) get your Z appraised and submit the paperwork to your insurance company. Do not delay, go find someone and make an appointment to have it done. Doing one after an accident is pretty hard to do.

styles of accounting. I take pride in my ability to track the expenses of the project. Mine truly is a hobby and I keep a "log" of all expenses and time tables. I like to use it as reference point if nothing else. After reading all these posts, I think we all agree that we will never get the money back or have a return on investment. I don't think any of us really expect our Z's to provide us with retirement income. However, I personally make a withdrawal on all those cash deposits everytime I plant my a55 in the seat and go for a spin. I have never put this much money into an "old" car and when I finish this one, I can't wait to start my next project which is already in the driveway.
You would probably laugh at me Ken, but one of my indoor winter projects is putting all my Z receipts and restoration photos into a ledger/scrapbook.
I can even account for every bottle of seafoam, interior plastic rivets, lugnuts, etc....
It is a hobby for me and I really enjoy it and take pride in it.
