My Z wont Start

Q:

I just bought a 76 280 for 400. i got it home and it would crank but wouldn't start. it wasn't getting fuel. So i replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. Still didn't start. So i replaced the cap and rotor and spark plugs and wires and bought a battery and had the fuel injectors cleaned. now instead of just cranking it trys to start and it makes a noise like it is letting out presser from the crank shaft vent hose and exhaust fumes come out a little but it still dosen't fully start. DOSE ANYONE KNOW HOW TO GET IT STARTED?

all cyls. getting spark & fuel? dissconnect the fuel line some where near the filter & see if your getting any.pick-up in tank could be plugged with gunk.also the fuel rail could be too. if you have a compressor blow out the entire fuel line.also can you post a pic of the 'crank shaft vent hose'?

Did it run when you bought it? Or has it been sitting for a while? If it's been sitting for awhile — like years — it's gonna take some time and work to get it running again.
Try this. First, go through and 'freshen up' every electrical connector under the hood. IN other words, one by one, disconnect every one of them — including batt terminals, injector connectors, ground wires, EVERYTHING, and clean and reconnect. If you can't clean, make-break the connectoin about 10 times to freshen contact. Also do this with the ECU's plugs, locaed under the driver's kick panel.
#2: If the gas in the tank is older than a year, drain it out and put new gas in. Then...
#3: take off the small wire to the starter (so you can spin engine without it starting). Take off the fuel line from the cold start valve and putthe line in a can or bucket (may need longer line temporarily). Crank the engine until you get pure, new, fresh gas comingout. (No gas? There's your prob.) Then reconnect.
#4: Freshen up the vacuum lines. Just put all new ones everywhere you can. For the moment, block off the tiny line that goes from theback of the manifold over to the white plastic bottle looking thing. Those run the heater flap doors and there's almost always a leak in that system somewhere.
#5: Buy an air filter and make sure there are no mouse nests in the filter houseing or the rest of the inlet.
Okay, now try it.

Plugs could be mixed up too. Sometimes the plugs need to be 180° out due to dumb things previous owners did.

In addition to what JR said I would also change the battery fusible links (they are usually under white plastic covers on the passenger side of the engine bay across from the dipstick). While you are in there use a little sand paper or emory cloth and sand the electircal contacts. The fusible links themselves and the covers are still available from Nissan and the whole mess will cost you less than $20.
You may want to check the fuel pump relay which is in the same area as the battery fusible links-it sits under the black cover that the battery fusible links are attached to. I had to replace one recently in one of my '78 280Z's (it had been sitting on and off since September 1995). Nissan no longer carries them but NAPA still had them and the best part was that they were the correct Niles of Japan units and I think it was about $40. Last I checked they still had about 130 units in inventory.
