It's a Z from Japan that is right hand drive. Plus they had the mirrors up on the fenders.
They changed the name to 240Z, 280ZX, etc. when they were shipped to the states. In Europe, I think they only got the 260Z, might have been RHD, but still not called a Fairlady.
A:
really? theres a 240z in my area with a bad motor for sale, might have to go check it out.

LA260Z "its not from the U.S. and is right hand drive.....thats pretty much it......."
WRONG..
UK and OZ cars are Right Hand Drive too and that doesnt make them fairladys.
"I think" the fairlady had a 2.0litre engine and was only available to the Japanese market. Other distinguishing features were the mirrors on the fenders a special grille and a few other features that I dont know enough about to post on here.
I didn't have a Clue??!!! Until I found Blue...

The 280ZX was also considered a Fairlady ONLY in the Japanses market....so all S30 \ S130 and possibly Z31 as well were all considered Fairladies.
This name was not brought to the US and rest of the world as it was considered not "macho" enough by Nissan Marketing Group to hang with the other sports cars of the day like RX7, Z28 etc etc

JDM.
Originally manufactured to be sold in the japanese domestic market, not for export.
Export models with poser badges are not true Fairlady cars.

Nissan's little roadster sports car built up untill 69(maybe 70) is a Fairlady, not sure if they were ever officaly called a Fairlady anywhere except Japan. In '69 started making the S30 Fairlady Z. They coexisted for a short time and Nissan had both a Fairlady and Fairlady Z on the market, but they dropped the Fairlady all together and went with the Fairlady Z.
Any Japanese market Nissan Z car from 1969 to present day is a Fairlady, a Fairlady Z but still a Fairlady.

Yeah, we have a 300 at ECU that some kid drives and has the Fairlady labels on it. Its left-hand drive with a dealer sticker on the backend from a Maryland dealership and has fartcan exhausts. So damn annoying... I make sure I park my 76 next to him.

Can anyone explain how the "Fairlady" title came about? The reason is in all the Z books, but since no one reads in America anymore (well, I do, but the FBI is looking for me.....reading is considered subversive now), I am wondering how obscure this bit of trivia happens to be.

From what I've heard/read way back when one of the big wigs at Nissan came to the states and saw the play "My Fair Lady" while he was here. He liked the play so much he named Nissan's sports car after it.

ZX-AE you sir are correct. Though it was if not mistaken MR. K the big wig. Also Gizmo that Z looks exactly like the one in my storage unit. Ahh $300 for a legalized Fairlady and a L28 stroked out to a 3.0L.

YORGO how do you do it. Amazing, funny and appropriate.
Also - the Fairlady designation goes back to late 1950's - President of Nissan was the one who liked the title of the musical.
The Japanese have a long tradition of admiration for art in many forms and comes from Buddist & Taoist teachings: even the Samuri had a respect an appreciation for art.
Before the 1200 & 1600 roadsters there was a model in 1960, I forget the number designation but I believe this was the first Fairlady and very few came to the US.
In Houston I know a man who has one and for several years said it was one of only two known here: since then he said he's heard of two more in the US for a total of four.
Things and ideas don't literally translate well from one language to another.
Marketing ideas don't always work well from country to country.
American makers of "Big John" canned beans were expanding into Canada- Quebec in particular whith speakers of French and English.
Big John in French is Goss Jean so the board votes for Gross Jean's Beans.
They were lucky that a Candadian (Qebecois?) secretary noted and warned the company before it was too late - in Quebec "Gross Jeans" means big tits.

4 of the first model Fairlady in 1960; again I don't remember the number designation. I think it is talked about in the Z history book but I don't know if it shows a picture.
The one here in Houston reminds me of a fatter slightly higher bodied Austin healey.

The Fairlady Z is a JDM vehicle.
The archives are full of the particulars.
If it's LHD, it's not a Fairlady.
If it's RHD, it's not necessarily a Fairlady.
If it's RHD, post 1973, pre 78 and has an L26 in it, it's not a Fairlady.
Fender Mirrors, Fuse Holders in the Kick Panel, L20A Engine. Those are some of the odd basic things to check for when looking. No rear clearance lights on the quarter panels. Running lights that can be illuminated as parking lights on ONE SIDE of the car or the other, INDEPENDENTLY of the combination switch...
The list goes on...

well in japan Nissan has a habit of naming their cars after women. Like Silvia, Laurel, Gloria, and some others I forget then we have Fairlady. In america they just rebadged it 240Z 240SX, 510, 280Z, 300ZX, etc... because they thought us Americans would like names like that. Kinda like fighter jets I guess O_o'. They just wanted to change the name that's all. Some fairladys had different options compared to the US though like spoilers, fenderflares, etc...
The same goes for other Japanese automanufacturers like Toyota names all their cars after flowers or something. Like Celica, Corona, etc... They have name like Aristo and Soarer for they lexus counterparts.
Mitsu also they had 3000GT here in the states and its a GTO in Japan.
The only difference is what they call it.
