throttle linkage

General Chat

Q:

do the stock throttle linkages on a '78 280z require any maintenance (adjustment, lubrication, etc.)? the reason i ask is that it seems to take a lot of pedal pressure to get going and when i let off the gas the throttle response seems to be very abrupt.
'78 280z -41,000 original(?) miles. a work in progress.....

I've had them wear. Seems a shot of cleaner & lube helped. That was on a former 78.
Anyone can drive a new car.

I have lubricated my linkage 1 time sence getting my 76z. I used LPS1 spray grease. I did this just to check all ends and springs. It sounds to me "possibly" that the original Throttle Body(TB) Return Spring was\is replaced added to and\or modified. I did this 1 time as the 280z I had liked to "hang open" due to a weak TB(throttle Body) spring. VERY scary.
Is your z a new purchase or had it a while? If its a new purchase and you know the previous owner ask if there was any springs added to the TB. The spring should be 1 coiled around the input shaft to the\on the TB. Did you do any engine bay cleaning lately? TB adjustments? The throtle linkage should be very smooth to operate.
Suggestion- with the car OFF have a friend push on the gas while you inspect the linkage- Touch\feel\listen\watch. A sticky linkage is dangerous.
Just my 2 cents...
Yup I found it in a junkyard and made it look Sweet ;-)
