Freakin' Gas

General Chat

Q:

Saw this thing on the news, people in IRAQ are in mass protest because they are paying a little less than 200% increase on their gas price as per gallon. They are NOW PAYING $0.38 TO A GALLON compare to $0.13 before. Must be too hard for them huh?
A:

You have any idea how much they make? Or any idea what $.38 is worth there? You can still buy food at a grocery store for $.38. Shoot, I'll give you $1.50 if you can bring a gallon of explosive gas 10,000 miles+ here from the middle east. Perhaps it is too hard for them to cope with. We complained about it going from 1 dollar to 2.50 to no end, while people in Europe said we were unappreciative idiots as they filled up for that much a liter. I know I went into more detail than you anticipated, but let's not be hypocritical.

Gas prices are more expensive in Europe because they don't have much oil that comes from there. They buy over 70% of their oil from the Middle East (same for Japan), whereas we only buy about 35 to 40% of the oil we use from there. We are lucky to have Texas, Alaska and the Gulf to help us out.
Did anyone hear or read that the government OKed drilling for more oil up in Alaska?
God must love stupid people, he made SOOOOO many of them!
A:

"as prices are more expensive in Europe because they don't have much oil that comes from there"
europe pays the SAME price for world oil as the usa and they have the whole north sea and all of russia supples close by. the difference is TAXES. welcome to socialist europe.
A:

I was in japan few months ago (when gas was 3bucks a gallon) and gas stations there were charging whopping
100yen / litre for cheap and 140 yen/ litre for expensive gasoline
so doing units conversions we are talking about 3.50 a gallon to 5.00 a gallon
I think some one is doing double conversion

I wonder if oil/gas prices in utah and neighboring states will start to go down once they get this huge oil deposit out of the ground. :D

European prices are high because average fuel economy is better. Notice I said average. Europe has to import the majority of its oil and thats very expensive. Oil from the North Sea and Russia if very expensive to drill because it is harder to extract than Middle East Oil. The type of oil they get also requires more to refine than Middle East Oil. The last thing that hurts is that they do have a higher fuel tax. But considering that Europe has a better roads than the US thats not that makes it a little easier. And remember your paying a huge tax on US gas too, around $0.40 a gallon if I remember correctly (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
The truth is the US became so accustomed to cheap oil that it never thought about the consequences when other countries would begin to use more oil. Thats why our prices have gone up. Our gasoline is still the among cheapest in the world.

"European prices are high because average fuel economy is better"
i think you have that backwards. people will choose higher mileage when prices rise (imho).
A:

don't forget, unemployment is in double digits in Iraq and they import gas because their refineries are being rebuilt.
We have cheap gas in the US, and the largest economy, and we are the largest consumer of energy in the world. Something has to give somewhere and you can guess who it will affect first.

A:

Average fuel economy has nothing to do with gas prices. It's all about taxes. The federal tax on each gallon of gas is 18.4 cents. On average, taxes account for 60 percent of the price of gas in Europe. In August of this year the price of gas in the US without taxes was $2.17, while in Britian it would be $1.97. With taxes, the US was $2.56 and Britian was $6.06. In France, over 70 percent of the price is taxes.

theres only 4 liters in a gallon. i have to use my MGB GT instead of my zx because of it, and also the lack of money.
