Q:

I have a 260z 2+2 which I have started to restore. I am not very experienced in autobody work and my z has a decent amount of rust. Can anyone recommend some treatment to effectively eliminate the rust and return of rust as long as possible...besides sanding?

It it is a rust bucket,i would look long & hard at getting another Z to restore and use this car for a donor.Putting big money & time into a car that has limited appeal, may not be the best thing.
If the car is mechanically sound, then you might be able to pick up a Z body with no engine/tranny for cheap.

If the rust has rotted away most of the metal you could work with, find another Z. If there is still good metal go with sandblasting.
If you watch a lot of Overhaulin, Trucks!, etc.. you will see many cars that look good, but when they start pulling on the rusted metal it just falls apart. All POR will do is make a paintable surface out of the rust and seal it from spreading. It will not save badly rusted metal period.

The ONLY way to be rid of the rust is to replace the rusted metal with new metal. If it's not bad, then you can get some phosphoric acid based products to eat the rust and leave a protective coating to keep it from coming back. Naval Jelly works good for this as well as Oxi-solve, and some products sold by Eastwood. You will have to get rid of the heavy rust first, that is the ONLY way to stop it. The others just encapsulate it rust, but it's not gone and the damage it caused is NOT reversed. Give some more details as to the condition of your car and we can go further.

Thanks for the info.
I have started sanding the exterior of the body. I am thinking there is not too much rust. The two worst spots are on the trim just below each door. The metal there is rusted through. I was thinking I would have to have a pro just weld in some new panels. Other than that, the rust only appears in small light patches in a few places (edge of back window, around sunroof). There appears to be little to no rust in the engine compartment, and interior metal. Thanks for the replies again.

The most important areas to check for rot are the frame rails. The worst will be under the battery tray.
