Broken valve cover bolt/nut :-(

General Chat

Q:

Hi,
This is regarding a '96 Camry LE V6. I would post in the Toyota Forum, but you Z guys are smarter and I need your advice.
While tightening my valve cover bolts, one of them broke!!! I didn't even reach torque spec yet. I slowly turn each of the bolts slowly, doing each one little by little.
How do I remove the broken bolt tip? It's a little deep inside and I cannot get it with a vise-grip.
Please help!!!!! I'm desperate....
ps. Anyone know what a machinist/dealer charge for a broken bolt removal??? I know they can probably rape me on the price since they know I'm in trouble.

I'm assuming those bolt are fairly small. I would start off with a reverse drill bit and try to drill it out. Obviously you need a reversable drill. Sometimes the bolts will just screw out. If not then you have a nice little hole in which to stick in the correct size easy out. Hope this helps.

Try using a sharp pointed "all" to place on one side of the broken bolt and hitting it with a hammer to slowly turn it.

I have had luck in the past by sticking the broken bolt back the in the hole and while exerting downward pressure screwing it out. If there is sharp edge to the break this will work sometimes.
