Nissan VG33E timing belt broke.

General Chat

Q:

Correct me if I am wrong. I beleive this is an engine that needs to be replaced if the timing belt breaks. Friend of mine was driving his at about 25 mph and it quit running.
I diagnosed a timing belt was broken. So I may have to give him the bad news ahead of time before I attempt a timing belt replacement.
Anybody have to deal with the pathfinder timing belt woes. Let me know what you learned. thanks..

It's a good thing there is two kinds of luck, or I wouldn't have any at all.

Depending on the year, I think your friend is lucky. I put a belt on a 2001 Exterra that had died while driving. Started right up with the new belt. :o) The funny thing was it didn't sound anything like an engine with a broken t-belt. Pulled the Dist cap, cranked it over, and the rotor didn't turn.

You might not have to replace the engine....probably just the heads....
Ususally it's the valves that suffer when the timing belt breaks, the pistons are hearty enough to handle themselves.
Somtimes you can get by with just replacing the belt, but that's just being very, very lucky.

Not always, but you would think so. It's usually the case that if a T-belt breaks on an interference motor, yeah, it's a pretty good bet the head and/or motor is toast. Really, the best way to tell is to replace the belt and see what happens when it starts. I had a frience get lucky that way. If the engine died quick enough and the valves were mostly closed at the time of the breakage, he might get lucky. You just won't know until you fix the belt or remove the heads.
