I was about to say it is a dolphin, not a shark. By the way, my first cousin was killed by a Great White sea kayaking off the LA coast in ~1989. She and a buddy were kayaking together. They found the kayaks lashed together 10 miles up the coast, never found his body, and she washed ashore with a huge chunk taken out of her leg. Autopsy said she bled to death, not drowned. Ouch.
Shark attack expert in Florida said what likely happened was that the shark came up from below fast and from behind. Rammed kayak, punching a hole in it (one kayak was "holed", one was bitten). This knocked whoever was in it out, then shark bit that one (likely my cousin). Then waited and came back for more after 15-20 minutes lurking nearby.
Horrible.
Most surfers survive after attacks because sharks strike, then wait for prey to bleed to death rather than risk getting hurt with a wounded and flailing prey. During this time, lots of swimmers/surfers escape. If they get prompt help, they live.

Actually sharks don't attack people. If they hit a person it's by mistake. The reason surfers survive is because the shark figures out they aren't going after a fish or something after the first hit.

We get shark attacks and sightings here in Australia all the time, Ive even had a first hand experience with them before when I used to surf as a kid. Put it this way, if you live near the ocean and go out alot eventually you'll see a shark and if you're slightly unlucky you'll get eaten. Barely makes the 10th page of the newpapers here if someone is chomped up.

#1 - If I see a shape like that - I'm not going to reach into my cut off's to get the field guide to check: Dorsal fin A. Shark, B. Dolphin - see appendex C sub-section 4 on page 257.
#2 - I havent met a vending machine yet that I couldn't out run - well Ok, at my age they're gaining on me, but so far so good.
#3 - in Houston you're more likely to get run over, several many times by an enraged wife or girlfriend in a Mercedes.

Thats what all the foam in the sea is. RABIES JUICE!!
Thats what I refuse to swim in the ocean anymore. That rabies juice gets sucked in through your skin and then you end up getting rabies too. Make sure you wear a full body latex suit (with facemask and snorkel filter) next time you even think about going to the beach.
