Q:
Hey guys, what do you think about this?
"Michelin to withdraw at end of 2006
Tyre suppliers Michelin are to end their involvement in the sport at the end of next season. It follows the French company’s long-running disagreement with Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, over plans to switch to a single tyre supplier.
The FIA had intended to make that switch in 2008, claiming it will reduce costs and make the sport fairer and safer. However, in light of Michelin’s withdrawal, the move is now likely to happen a year earlier, in time for the 2007 season.
In a statement, Michelin said that competition between tyre suppliers, and the technical innovation which that competition inspires, has always been one of the key reasons for their participation in Formula One racing.
With that element of competition removed, and in light of what Michelin described as “constant changes to racing regulations without warning”, the company said that “continuing to make long-term investments in Formula One no longer presents the same interest.”
Michelin added that they would not hesitate in contemplating a future return to the sport, should circumstances change to their liking. "

yawn... from what i remember, they already started pulling out earlier this year at indy.

Goodyear wouldn't stay either because of rules in F1. When they made the rule about 'groove tires' Goodyear cried BS, and pulled out. Sounds like Michelin is doing something similar.

are you saying that in a condoning or condemning manner? I think Goodyear had every right to raise the BS flag. Slicks have better grip which leads me to my next vent.
Why is safety such a big concern?
1. You're driving a 230+mph, 900hp, sub-1900lb car, not taking your kids to the grocery store in your minivan.
2. These racers are very very very familiar with the risk of driving these cars.
3. And I'm sure that most all of the drivers would much rather die (with a smile on their face) in an accident in their F1 car, than to not be able to drive...or they never would have gotten into it in the first place. I know I would. Drivers that have been killed in F1 accidents died doing what they love.
4. These cars even have traction control. F#$@#% TRACTION CONTROL! If that (and the grooved tires) isn't the most asinine thing, I don't know what is. If you aren't a good enough driver to be able to feather/gun the throttle when needed...you don't need to be driving one!
I agree with you 100% Arubabill. The FIA prez needs a reality check.
God must love stupid people, he made SOOOOO many of them!

Those regulation makers needs to pull their head out of their arses. Tyre competition is what kept the seasons interesting--especially in 2005!
Rumour has it that those grooves will be gone for the 2008 season so that "passing" can be encouraged. I personally thought the grooves were plain ridiculous.
The completely revamped 2008 regulations are supposed to be revealed in the coming days. I'd love to see what they came up with this time around.
BTW: Entry of Super Aguri into F1 is being blocked by some teams. They can only enter F1 after the "deadline" if every team agrees to it. Toyota, Honda, and Midland all publicly expressed their support. I wonder who is blocking them???

I don't blame Goodyear one bit..... If I remember correct their statement was that race tires didn't have grooves, and they were not going to make race tires with grooves. Could have been just rhetoric, but very good rhetoric if it was.
