So you think Z parts are expensive? Try Benz
$160 dollar distributor caps and $1,500 electronic throttle valves. $1050 with employee discount. Glad I run Nissan products they get from A to B just about as well.

Personally I think they do it a lot better, but I've only ridden in a Benz once and I didn't see what the hype was about. I own a Jaguar and I don't understand that one either. $400 for a starter that looks almost identicle to a chevy starter. I'll stick with what's cheap from now on.

Z car parts are relatively dirt cheap for a vintage sports car.
This is the exact reason I am not driving around in an old Alfa Romeo.

years ago I heard a story of a guy who would fly to remote airfields around the world to recover WWII aircraft that had crashed. These were minor crashes where the plane maybe went off the end of the runway and collapsed the landing gear. Not major nose-first dives. The plane he flew in on was I think an old DC 3 and he had an entire machine shop in there. So when he'd drag a mangled spitfire or whatever out of the jungle, he'd actuall MAKE the replacement stuff on the spot, install a replacement engine (which he had brought in) and — whenever he could — fly the old plane out. Great story, always wondered if it was true.

My dad used to know & work with a guy who bought up lots of WWII surplus planes after the war. People said he was crazy. Well he drained all the fuel and sold it. That more then covered the cost of the purchase!

For newer cars, i can see why people want the image factor with BMW/Benz. For older ones that look seriously outdated [notice older benz/bmw's seem to outdate the fastest of all cars], I have no idea why people pay so much for them and the parts/labor associated with them. It has been proven over and over again they are not that reliable and the power/handling certainly isn't suprassing the crowd.
Benz especially has rediculously high part costs, but in some cases it is good. If you look for a 140k$ V12 rediculous luxery filled S600 in mint condition in years as new as 95, they can be found for 20 grand! Reason being that within the next 3-5 years you will dump another 20-30 grand into parts/labor unless you really know what you are doing because the parts for a 140k$ car are so high.

I have an Mercedes 85 300 SD with 200K on it. It's a daily driver for when the Z is down. It's very reliable. People buy & restore those just like the Zs. Parts may be higher but not much. So what they run forever. I've been surprised that they weren't as bad as I'd heard & expected. It's only needed glow plugs in 2 years & always starts. Now to research intricacies of turning up the boost.
Anyone can drive a new car.
A:
Like they say, Owners of Mercedes/BMW/European cars always have a Japanese car in the garage that they depend on and drive more of.
Funny, we Americans are Euro-centric and we think everything from Europe is the best. When I went to Europe, my Dutch and German friends were surprised when I told them that. Over there, they think things from Japan are the best, and things from Eastern Europe and America suck. As much as a like to, I really can't argue with them when it comes to our cars, though.

It's the grass-is-greener syndrome. That is why everyone here runs out to buy Lotus Elises when they were released, even though they are nothing to write home about. In Britain, Lotuses are unreliable junk, kinda like Ford here. What you can't have, you think is better... oh well.
A:
Lotus is junk? If you measure the greatness of the car based only on its reliability, then you must think the Honda Civic is the best car ever made.
Lotus cars are all limited production. As such, people assume they will break. Buyers already know it won't run every day out of the year. They put up with the trouble because the driving experience far outweighs the negatives. The same can be said with a Ferrari. If you know any owners, you know how frequently you have to TOW the car to the dealership for mantanence and repairs.
You will tolerate much more for a hot chick than you would an average looking one. It's the same for a car as well.

Anyone want a Jaguar XJS? Runs great if you replace the starter. Of course that requires dropping the rack and passengers side exhaust downpipe, then fanagling a 12 point (yes 12 point) socket to the top bolt on the starter. Once in there you cannot move the bolt because there is no room to push or pull the ratchet. Try a universal joint adapter, now the socket won't stay on as you apply pressure because of the angle and small size of the bolt head. Haven't tried it with my air ratchet yet. It better work...I'm tired of this thing.

Try this ratchet Twist the handle and it spins the socket. They sell a copy of it at Home Depot, or Grainger
