Hey guys, I was wondering how many F1 fans we have here in east Tennessee. I'm thinking about arranging a get together at one of a couple places here locally probably on Sunday nights starting next season. The most likely candidate will probably be a sports bar in Knoxville called Beef O Brady's. Great food, big screens, full bar, F1 action, and everyone wearing red! Anyone interested? I'm going to contact the East Tenn Region SCCA about it as well.

I've tried to start a few threads regarding Formula One on this board before. I didn't get too many responses. LOL
As a little kid, I grew up watching Ayrton Senna racing his McLaren-Honda. I've been a pretty big fan since then.
There are people here who are "fans" or just knowledgable about the sport. Most people in this country are in the NASCAR marketing bandwagon. F1 is more reserved for the European market . . . and a pretty big group in Japan as well (German and Japanese cars tend to use technology that trickled down from F1). It's difficult to find people in America who really appreciate F1.
Good luck with your plans.
Perhaps I should try to find Formula One fans at my school as well.

Have to agree........just trying to find folks that know what F1 is can be difficult.
I haven't seen any news about Super Aguri other than they are not on the list for '06 teams. Anyone know what happened?

They are going to reapply again in hopes of Ecclestone exempting them from the $47M admission "deposit." They are also in the process of purchasing the design of the Arrows chassis that was never built (remember Minardi scrapping the design even though it was predicted to be very good?) as well as its old facilities.
Suzuki Aguri is really serious about this. I'm going to trust that he'll do everything possible to bring a new team for next year. Ecclestone is also pushing for the new team. Odds are all going for them!

I've got my fingers crossed on this one..... I remember watching him drive, he's got a game face, and I'm sure he's serious about not only getting to the grid, but winning too.
F1 needs new blood, and the more the merrier..... 47M though....good grief, now that some "handling" fee don't ya think?!?!?!?

The world needs more TV coverage of WRC. WRC drivers are probably some of the best in the world. Anyone who has ever competed in a Rally or an Open Road race can attest to the driver/navigator being in sync... You practically have to know what the other guy is going to do before he does it......and 100% trust in the guy sitting next to you is an understatement.

There are so many types of racing like F1 that I'd like to watch but simply don't have coverage readily accessible to me. I am able to watch many international TV channels through the internet on my computer but only major events with multi-channel coverage are of quality so that there isn't 'lag' or frequent downloading.

When the top teams are topping $500M annual budgets, $47M is nothing. Michael Schumacher's $40M salary is generated purely through sponsors. Suzuki Aguri should be able to use his charisma and get some sponsors signed up soon. I'm praying that things do work out!
Correct me if I'm wrong but $40M in NASCAR can get you through a couple years.
Such is the price to pay to participate in the top racing formula in the [FIA] world!

Take a Champ car (indy car) and deregulate the engine manufacturer and aero design. This means instead of everyone racing the same-old car, there is competition in the garage as to who can design the best engine and body combination. Then you factor in the skill of a driver at 300+ kmh.
Therefore hundreds of millions of dollars can be spent in research very easily.
A:
"Correct me if I'm wrong but $40M in NASCAR can get you through a couple years."
And that's exactly what NASCAR wants: relatively contained costs through relatively low tech. And yet a team needs $10-$12 million per year just to remain competetive.
F1 is the pinnacle of automotive racing, no doubt. But the Cup guys must be paid their due. As must the WRC, the IRL, the Champ, the World of Outlaws, CASCAR, Busch, Craftsman Truck, and every other class of racing throughout the world. They're all excellent tests of men and machines in their own way.

I think NASCAR is too commercialised to be considered a serious form of racing. All forms of motorsport exist to generate money, but NASCAR goes over the edge. That turns me off NASCAR.
Formula One has always been an elitist sport. The people associated in the sport have always been very wealthy people. Being successful in the sport requires billions of dollars in investment (look at how much Toyota has invested and they haven't even won a race in 5 years!).
Compare the facility of McLaren and Hendrick Racing. It's like comparing a caveman's dwelling to a Swiss medical facility . . . literally.
The waterfalls around the building and the lake itself are used to cool the underground windtunnel at McLaren.

Then you go on to gush over billions of dollars in investment re Toyota, and get all twittery over McLaren's multi-multi-multi million dollar facility.
Have you noticed the sponsor stickers on F1 cars? Where do you think the teams get their money? They just demand much larger amounts from the sponsors, so less sponsors are needed.
Don't kid yourself: F1 is just as commercialized as NASCAR. F1 is just too snooty to admit it.
A:
I'm not kidding myself. I already said every form of motorsport is a commercial business. So what is your point? NASCAR just takes it to another level with pleasing their sponsors over anybody else. It's more of a commercial circus than an actual race. But consumers still buy into it . . .
Don't you realise the reason why NASCAR is probably the least expensive mainstream motorsport series? More teams = more cars = more sponsors = more endorsements = more television time = more advertisers = more revenue. They also make this fact blatantly obvious.
Formula One isn't a one-make series like NASCAR. It's a completely different racing formula on a completely different level. Since each team has to develop their own chassis and keep up with the latest technology, F1 budgets are outrageous. So how many NASCAR teams need a full scale windtunnel?
If you measure "the degree of commercialisation" with how many stickers a race car has, there is a flaw in your reasoning. Formula One isn't called the "Marlboro Cup" for a reason.
I'll shut up now . . .

F1 didn't win any fans that's for sure..... but Michelin is going to buy up enough 'fans' for next years race to fill the stands. Least that's what they "said" they were going to do to try and make up for what happened in the 05 race.
At least Ferrari had one race they could dominate last year, pity no one else was in it!! LOL! Poor Ferrari took it in the tooshie last year. I'm betting there are some design engineers at Ferrari that haven't been home much this off season. We shall see we shall see!

I'll bet there are some engineers at Bridgestone burning the midnight oil too. But they did take 3rd place with only one win all season. Let's not forget that.
A:
People say that the reason Ferrari fell and McLaren rose in 2005 is because of Nicholas Tombazis. He was Ferrari's chief aerodynamicist until he was signed by McLaren in 2005. Even Jean Todt has admitted that this may have been what killed Ferrari.
How else would have Ferrari been so off pace with new aerodynamic regulations? Aerodynamics make or break an F1 team.
