Q:
I know a lot of you guys swear by Gojo pumice hand cleaner and a scrub brush after you get your hands all dirty changing oil or something like that. But I have an alternative that blows Gojo out of the water. When I was pulling the motor out of my 77 a while back, my hands got filthy. Removing the exhaust from the manifold, unbolting the tranny from the block, etc etc etc. I went inside and got some foaming orange cleaner for stoves and things like that. It's the stuff that you spray it and it instantly foams up. I sprayed that stuff on my hands and it literally ate the great and grime right off. My hands were still a lil bit dirty, but were still much cleaner than when I was out there earlier doing it, and ran scalding water over my hands and scrubbed and scrubbed with a brush and Gojo. And I didn't even have to scrub! Sprayed it on, let it set for a minute or so, then rubbed my hands together for a lil bit under warm water and that's it. Go to the Wal Mart or wherever you like to shop and get foaming orange cleaner meant for stoves and things and give it a try.

Maybe I missed the humor...
Gojo has lanolin in it that hinders its performance. Fast Orange is the way to go :-)

I didn't mean to say 'hinders performance,' meant it leaves your hands feeling greasy. Sorry for the stroke of retardation.

Try engine or atf oil. Rub it into your hands and then wash them with regular soap. They'll clean up great.

Another great way to keep hands clean......an assistant. I don't have one of those yet. Actually , I like the fast orange if I have a hose nearby but I use the Gojo and a towel mostly. Those wet towels with the pumice in the can work pretty good too. Paul

Put on some cheap hand cream BEFORE you start work. Helps cleanup afterwards.

Something to remember about that oven cleaner...read the contents...see "sodium hydroxide"? Its lye...yes it will clean.... that used to be in soap many years ago...but it is caustic.

Not to sound like a public service annoucment, but
Has anyone read the MSDS on the chemicals we commonly use ?
There is an article (somewhere on my hardrive) about the forms of liver damage that result from exposures over long periods. Your health is certainly worth the $3-4 bucks for a box of latex gloves
Think about it!

People give me "im tougher than you" looks at the junkyard if they see the latex gloves lol. I wear em under work gloves and just clean my forearms up before heading home(230 mile drive to junkyard). Hands stay good and clean.
I dont give a **** if they want to get cancer at 50 instead of dying from a heart atack at 50, thats their problem lol. I'll take the quick death.
Actually the real reason was slipping and busting knuckles :(
Good motivator to wear gloves.

a painter freind of mine told me he puts a thin layer of vasaline on his face and hands before he sprays and afterward every thing cleans right off. however im thinking that might make it hard to hang on to your tools.

Anything with sodium hydroxide in it is a NONO for cleaning your hands. We use 2-10% NaOH here at work, and after two days of running the pilot lines, my hands feel like leather if I'm not wearing gloves. However, three weeks later when your fingernails grow out, they are paperthin and tear at the slightest impact. Sodium Hydroxide EATS the proteins in the skin and nails. It is not nice to your body, at all.

Before you START getting your hands dirty, put on some hand cream. It CLOGGS up your pores so they don't get all filled up with cancer causing used motor oil. CLEAN-UP will be FASTER this way! Norm K

Before I got into Security work in 1979 I worked as a printer for 5 years.
One of the old guys (20 years +) in the shop came back from washing his hands and couldn't stop his hands from bleeding.
The skin on his hands when dry would crack so badly the blood would ooz out.
After 20 years, the body could not repair itself from the harsh chemicals we used to clean ink off the rollers and other print machine parts.
I think the main ingrediant was benzene; notice the Lawyer adds for "if you've been exposed to Benzine in the workplace lately"?
Now there are are lot of federal regulations on chemicals in the work place.
I found dishwashing soap and then lava soap over that (at the same time) really cuts the grease. Go over it again with a nail brush for the stuff that didn't come off the first time.
Then use a moistuizer with aloe vera.
Maybe this sounds "girlie" to some - but when you're older and on perscription drugs the rest of your life to keep you alive: you'll wish you did more preventative maintenance on yourslef.
