Fiats...

General Chat

Q:

Anyone know anything about Fiat's? I'm thinking about picking one/two up for a project car. Found 2 1978's for sale for under $500.

If you have a decent job and are mechanically inclined, pick them up. If they aren't rusted out bad or nothing. If the wiring is shot, just get a Painless or EZ Wiring system, and have the motor rebuilt if need be. Paeco in Birmingham builds motors for tons of motors for obscure sports cars. Austin Healeys, Fiats, Lotus, etc...as well as Nissan motors, Ferrari, etc, but they are a race shop so a motor from them is gonna cost you a few thousand but it'd be well worth it.

I worked on some of the Spyders back in the day......I didn't see anything all that wrong with them, and I thought they were fun on the test drives. I made money on every one of them I worked on, which means they are fixable, and they CAN stay fixed too. Stay away from the X1/9 any year. The X1/9 was the only car I would flat refuse to work on when I was wrenching for a paycheck.

I posted a similar topic a couple of weeks ago titled “Withdrawn from the U.S. Foreign Auto Makers”. You might want to scroll down and read it because Fiat qualifies. I received many good replies from knowledgeable people here.
Fiat owners clubs can usually be found in the bigger cities. Look for an owners club where you live. The owners club will be affiliated with a parts supplier. For service, it’s going to be DIY or someone in the club might be able to refer you to a shop that knows how to repair Fiats. You might want to think twice about buying it if you live in a smaller city or town where there isn’t a Fiat owners club.

I worked on them 78 Fiats! Kinda tight in the "replacing the points" area. Looking back, I'd r&r THE DISTRIBUTER! Good project if you're not needing instant results. God on gas! NK
