Q:
How reliable are the 4.0 liters? I want a mid to late 90s Cherokee, not a Grand. I think the Grands look a little silly, I like the plain look of the Cherokee Sport. I see they're fairly cheap, a decent mileage one costs about $4000 average. 4 wheel drive, decent interior size. I figure they're pretty tough since I see a lot that have over 150,000 miles on them on Ebay and Autotrader.
I'd like to sell my 85 300ZX and maybe get $1800 and save up a little extra and get a Cherokee. Then I'd have my classic 280Z, my AWD DSM, and an AWD suv for transporting people or music gear. Any opinions are appreciated :)

they are the most bitchen cars other then a z. you can put them through just about anything stock, but when them millage reaches 200k beware it best just to replace the engine then to rebuild it, but it you do rebuild it, do it yourself.

You cant kill the 4l its indestructible, 200k is just getting broken in, you cant kill the 4l short of draining the oil out of it.
Ive owned a bunch of them and they have just been great running cars. They will do so much offroad just stock, they get decent gas mileage(around 20 mpg pretty consistently for me)
Others here will say bad things about them, but having owned about 15 of them Ive seen the range of problems they can have, and I gotta say, they are great!

My other car is a 4.0L jeep cherokee. Let me tell you something about that 4L... they last forever. I've had two of them. They leak oil a bit and get totally covered in grease (seems to be common on american engines) but man that thing is solid! It has great power, the cherokee is an awesome off road vehicle, and you can beat the poop out of it and it will still love you for it. I had a '92 and my current one is a '91.
Just a small tip: If you get a '92 Cherokee with the selectrak 4x4 system, it comes with a Toyota transmission bolted on that is MUCH better than the Jeep tranny in the '91 I have now.

Funny, i just talked to an owner yesterday. He said it was a 4l inline 6 with a ton of torque. He also said the motor was ford and efi was chev (who knows)

Hmm, I woulda said the motor was a AMC/Jeep. As far as I know, Ford doesn't even make an inline 6 4 liter do they?

The Jeep 4L is a mopar engine.

I own a 240 and a 97 Cherokee Sport. Both great vehicles.
I have my Z lowered and my Jeep lifted 3.5" Poly bushings on the Jeep and poly bushings on the Z. I just can't leave 'em alone, can I?
The 4 L motor is in fact Mopar, I believe it was derived from a Chevy engine back in the late 60s. Chrysler also built a very similar inline slant 6.
The motor is just about indestructable. I say just about because I happened to go through one at 52K. (long story) Anyway, I have no hard feelings. My jeep is as reliable as it gets. Aside from a few nitpicks here and there, she's all good. I definitely recommend one. You'll love it. It fits snug, it handles well, and it has boatloads of torque. And it will go through just about anything.

Ok the 4L engine is the top of the line in the evolutionary process. It all started back in the 70s with the 4.25 inline 6. Found in CJs and DJs of the era it eventually found its way into the eagle 4wd cars. In 1987 after being purchased by chrysler the 4L version was put into the Jeep Cherokee, The early years of the 4l were an AMC design that is somewhat finicky, in 1990 a chrsyler EFI setup was introduced to the 4L becoming what is known as the high output, In 1996 the next major change came to the EFI setup with OBDII, with various changes being made to the the EFI setup untill the model was discontinued in 2001.
The body remains basically unchanged from 1984 to 2001. With the most major update being in 1997, 1997 marked the introduction of dual airbags, a newer more rounded look, and overall more updated look to it.
The Cherokee continues to be produced in china as a variation of the pre 97 and post 97 models.

yah, dad has a '90 jeep cherokee with 178xxx miles on it, and it has never had any major maintenance done that i know of, and it still has a bit of pep (i make sure to give her a lil exercise once in a while)... the header is cracked though, so we're gonna have to fix that, but other than that, its still running great, theyre good cars
A:
Ahh are you sure on the high output designation Zluster, coming from just EFI? You sure it wasn't when they put the high port head on it, vs the low port head, which yielded an additional 13hp? :)
Not trying to be an ass, just testing out my new found Jeep knowledge from Jeep sites.

A:
Yes Im sure.
all 4L engines in cherokees have always been EFI, however the high output version came about after chrylser revamped the EFI with their version. which included among other things, a change in the head design.
Keep in mind I have owned about 15 of them and have done all sorts of work on them.

Aha, so I was sorta right :-D lol
A:
I kinda thought the High Output was the result of lower gearing in the tranny... something that came with the towing package or offroad package.
I guess you learn something new everyday.

The 4.2 was AMC in the older Jeeps, And you can get the Cherokee in a 2.8 V6, that motor is junk but basically any straight 6 is a good motor from any I have dealt with. Fords 300, Jeeps 4.0 and 4.2, and ofcourse Nissans 2.8.
