Q:
I realize that the main focus for today is arguing over the left hand lane on the freeway, but.......time to sober up a bit from that.
Tomorrow is December 7th, despite the fact that we love our Japanese cars, the fact remains that tomorrow it has been 64 years since the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Imperial Japanese Navy.
We should all be thankful that such madness is long a thing of the past between the Japanese and United States governments, as well as we should also remember the dead from that day, and for the next four years of that conflict.
So let tomorrow be a day to remember and honor the fallen from that time in history, and a day of thanks for what has become since then.
HAND SALUTE!
TWO!

Aren't they allowed to drive in the left in Japan? :)

As a history buff, its always nice to see somebody mention it and respect it.

What a long strange trip it has been.
We nuke them, then attempt to rebuild their country.
They showed us the way.
Now we are major consumers of their products.
I wonder who learned the most......

My grandfather flew in the Air Force during the Korean War, and for some reason he is VERY anti-japanese. Well, surely enough, I was able to convert him in July. When I was working at Midway Nissan, I sold him his first japanese car ever.
At first, he actually felt really bad about buying a japanese car, almost as if he had personally let down the United States. Now, however, he LOVES his Altima 3.5 SE and can't say anything bad about it.
Personally, I think most of the best things in the world are produced in Japan. They have Honda, Toyota, Nissan in the car world. In the computer world they dominate as well.

my Grandfather JT Jones, who is still alive & kicking at the grand old age of 80, and was a veteran of the war following the Pearl Harbor attack.
His generation is truly a dying breed and a legacy that will be missed. He has always shared his wisdom with me and I truly believe him to be the most influential person in my life. He was 1 of 12 kids, started public work when he was 12, only got a 5th grade education, served his country in wartime, worked hard for his family and retired as Post Master for the Knoxville Tenn Lee Street Annex.
To him and all the other Veteran's in remembrance this week, I say "Thank You" for a job well done. I will never be able to repay you the enormous debt, but can only promise to make you proud of the sons, daughters and great grandkids that you leave or have left behind.
His most cherished gift to me was passing on his love of automobiles. He used to take me for rides in his VWs, Renaults, Fords, Chevys or whatever his most recent car acquisition turned out to be. He always had the coolest rides!
Thanks Pappaw! For the memories and the legacy...........

Read the novel "Flyboys" by James Bradley. You'll understand why many older Americans still dislike the Japanese.
Let's never forget those boys who went to the bottom of the Harbor inside the belly of a ship while they slept in their bunks.

I found out about 15 yrs ago that my father( who is still alive, but has cancer) was involed in the clean up mission at pearl harbor. all my life he never mentioned it, he would only say that he had been in the navy. i found out this from another relative. to this day he does not talk about it and has never accept any v.a. benifits. He did 4yrs in the navy and receveied an honorable discharge. if he got any medals or anything like that i dont know as he still doesnt talk about it. I too received my love of cars from my father who was an auto mechanic all of his life. i can still remember him showing me how to work on my first car 34 yrs ago and what to do to make it faster. Those memories will last forever and be cherished and passed on to my son.
I would like to say THANKS DAD!!! And THANKS YOU to all of the other veterans who defended what we have today. The men who stand up to fight for our country when its under attack are the bravest men in the world!!
Sorry for long post --i had to put it all in.

I salute my father, and any father who served and fought while in the military. I also salute my son who was awarded the Bronze star on his first tour in Iraq. He's due to come home this month from his second tour. I served in the Vietnam war and to this day I would willingly take my sons place, or my father's if it were possible. Thank you for the memories Dad.

My 1941 Buick still has the A gas ration sticker on the windshield and a very old faded "Remember Pearl Harbor" sticker in the back side window.
I put a WWII naval uniform coat and hat in the back when I put her in car shows.
She's not a show car winner: a couple of third place plaques - cause she's got orange pealed paint - but its original so what the heck.
At one show (we sometimes play Glenn Miller & other WWII era music) a woman was just staring at the car and the uniform saying nothing. I asked her if she wanted something and she looked down with an embarrassed smile and said she was just remembering.
I opened the car and told her to sit awhile. Jeanne put on another big band CD and we walked off for a while.
The woman had gone when we got back, and on a kleenex pack she wrote "Thank you - I will always remember". The coatsleeve of that naval uniform was very wet.
"Betty" Buick doesn't need any trophies. She serves a better purpose than just a fun car to drive.

That's what the old car world is all about, the memories and the great times. Occasionally they take us back to a moment or a place that only they can reach.
Great story and thanks for sharing, who knows that young, brave soldier may have been sitting next to her while you guys went for the walk........
No doubt the tears on the sleeve were probably happy ones!

I'm glad everyone took the time to remember.
When I was on my way to the Western Pacific, we stopped over at Pearl, wich is normal when you chop from the third to the seventh fleet. I was on an LST, bottom of the food chain, expendable, and we all knew it. Low morale was a constant problem. Knowing that you had just about a nil chance of survival if we ever did an amphibious assult, and seeing holes rusted in water tight hatches didn't help, we knew our place in the pecking order of the Navy.
As we pulled into Pearl and started our approach to our berth we had to pass the Arizona. The Arizona is still a commisioned ship, so you render honors. As she passed down our port side a call to attention and render a hand salute came over the 1MC. It was odd to notice that even the most fouled up sailor we had, stood smartly at attention and rendered a regulation salute. I'll never forget that moment, the gravity of where I was, and what I was doing was more than words can describe.
