To all those with tuner lugs on their aftermarket rims

General Chat

Q:

Hey guys I have some tuner lugs on the 17s on my 280Z, I'm almost 100% positive it's a Topline lug set. The key design is a 3 tip with a slight twist to the key pattern. I can take pics if someone thinks they might have the right key. I desperately need to borrow it for a day so I can get my wheels off my 280Z to ship to a guy. I'll pay shipping and put it back in the mail on it's way back the day after I receive it. My key broke and the lug is on too tight to put the remaining piece of the bit into a socket and get it off that way.
Please get with me....Mycarispurty@aol.com
Thanks!

we used to use pipes hammered onto the nut to get them off. not sure if this will work in your case, the nut has to have a slight taper in @ the end. or you could take it down to a tire/wheel place, alot of them will have the things needed to remve the locks. (if all else fails of coruse)

It won't...I need the key. But thanks anyways.

A buddy of mine and I hammered a Craftsman socket on the end of a locknut and was able to remove locknuts off his 260.

Could you buy another set of the lug nuts, use the tool to get the wheel off, and then return the lug nuts and tool?
A:

That would be un-ethical.
It would be better to use a Craftsman socket, hammer it on, take the nut off, take the nut out of the socket and return the socket to Sears for an exchange.

any good tire shop has a set of most of them. I bought a new key from them a few weeks ago for $3.

Its un-ethical to buy a new set of locks, use the tool, and return the set, but it's not un-ethical to mess up a perfectly good Craftsman socket (on purpose), and take it back for an exchange?

I used super glue to glue a socket to a lug nut once. Once I got it off, a small whack with a hammer separated the lug nut and the socket again.

That's correct. If you buy the nuts, the seller assumes you're buying them to keep. By only using it to 'steal' the use of the tool for a few minutes and returning them is essentially a fraudulent transaction.
The Craftsman hand tools are made to be beat on and Craftsman guarantees them against breakage of any kind under any circumstances. You are not violating either the intent or spirit of the original transaction 'agreement'.
And frankly, it may not even ruin the socket. I used an impact socket on one of my parts cars that had locking lugnuts that no one had a key for anymore and the socket was no worse after the event.
