Q:
Thinking of buying an '01 Ford Focus ZX3 for a daily driver. Anyone know anything good/bad about this car. The little 2.0 liter DOHC seems to be pretty peppy.
thanks,
Brent

I work at a local ford dealership as drivability tech and I can honestly say the only thing I have ever done to a focus is put a fuel pump in.. they are very reliable and that little Zetec engine is very solid.. I hope the one your lookin at is the 5 speed.. they are much more fun to drive than the automatics... the automatics kinda suck in the focus

Doesn't the focus have the record for most recalls ever for a single vehicle?

my buddies got one and it is fairly peppy - although when working at ford i dont know what trim if it mattered but we got focuses in quite often at about 30,000 and the breaks were strait ****ed - always needed new rotors and sometimes calipers although alot of ppl dont really know how to drive - though my buddies isnt the high end model or nothing but it is a nice car and they have never had a problem with it i think its an 02 or 03 - they lowereed it and put rims on it and its clean

American Civic? The last time I checked, this Ford Focus was not an American car. It's a German design built in the US. (The European Focus is built over there.)
As with all American version cars, it has softer suspension and less aggressive gearing. Nevertheless, it's a good car that got rave reviews all over the world.

I have an 01 Focus ZX3 with 156,000 miles on it. All I've done is brakes (twice) and a fuel pump. My son has an 02 Focus ZX3 and he's had no problems, just did the brakes with 46,000 miles on it. As long as you change fluids regularly, any car will treat you well. As for Mayo's comment about recalls, NO. the first year, 2000, had several, as do all first year models. The 01 had 3, one mechanical, to comestic. Don't spread rumors. Get facts.

My friend has a Focus SVT...its got a few extra little goodies (better suspension, leather on the interior, bumped up compression 170hp vs 112hp, 6 speed tranny....its a great little car...my Z can still beat it but its a good contender
I have another friend with a regular zx3...and its not as quick...but it has a decent pull in 1st-3rd gear...good on gas too

ranger, RWD easy to work on, or 240sx. FWD suck to work on, sucks to drive. FWD sucks, period. That is my view. A transverse engine, come on F'in Stupid. Torque steer? I could go on and on and .......................

Thanks for the input guys. This car is an '01 with 78k on the meter but is in great shape. It will make a good daily driver I believe, especially gas mileage wise since I have a 110 mile round trip to work everyday.
Thanks,

I had a ZX2 for a while and loved it. It shares the engine with the Focus. Not hard to work on. I have done timing belt jobs on two of them. Not hard at all just gotta take your time. No torque steer as they use a jack shaft. The Escort ZX2 handled well so I could only imagine the Focus would be better. Good car overall. I'd say go for it. Where are you to be called Cajun? Just asking as I am in Lafayette. Later, Paul
