Air hose reels that dont leak air?

General Chat

Q:

I just ordered and received an air hose reel and it leaked air like crazy at the rotating round brass fitting on the side. It had seals on the inner piece that goes through it but it was a terrible fit. Since it spins I know that smaller inner piece that goes into the rotating brass piece has to be a really tight seal and this one just isnt, but maybe they all leak a little bit?
I happenned to buy this one off ebay for $70 and it looked like a good one that everyone else basically sold. Anyone have a brand they use that actually doesnt leak air?

The cheap one that I purchased at Harbor Freight seems to be holding up well.

This inner piece locks in place with a snap ring only so there is no way to crank it down tighter.
it looks like the same one Harbour Frieght sells right now on sale for $39. Their more expensive one looks like it has a squaer end coupler and might be better fitting. i think the cheap ones have the round coupler that only fits tight with wa snap ring.

3/8 hose is 3/8 hose. ive used cheap crap and expensive stuff and the air tools all run the same.
A:

the tools run the same, but when it comes to coiling back up and lasting a long time, you cant beat goodyear.
They have been making rubber for longer than most of the founders of other companies have been alive.

Buy the cheap Harbor Freight Reel.
Disassemble it.
Go to the Parker store, and buy some Parker Super O-Lube, and some CORRECT SIZED O-Rings, as well as some Teflon Backers that will fit in the groove they provide.
Reassemble it with the GOOD sealing parts.
Hasn't leaked in 5 years, not that it didn't leak that much before (from 87 to 2000, but the compressor was cycling in the middle of the night, so I "rebuilt it" using real parts, and stopped it up pretty good!
Lots of the HF stuff is just a soft part or two from being troublefree for years!

the hose that came with my compressor was the plastic 3/8 type that will not coil at all. i just need to get some rubber hose then i wont need the retractable reel at all
Tony's suggestion is good though, but ive already packed it up to ship it backfor a refund.
A:

I'm like TonyD. I buy cheap and fix it up so it works right.

Maybe I lucked out. My reel doesn't seem to leak, or it's leaking at a rate I can't detect.

They all will leak just by design, but this was really bad. I just bought 50' of rubber hose that will coil up just fine as im not gonna buy another one.

I've got 4 of the HarborFreight auto-retractable reels, one 1/4" 75 footer, two 25' 3/8" reels and one 50 foot 3/8" and none of my reels leak noticeably. The cheap ass HarborFreight quick release couplers on the other hand, leak like a freakin' sieve.
I've got the compressor cycle time down to once every couple of days without use now. We'll see how long the wife will tolerate that...

Have you had yours in an industrial shop for 15+ years?
I did, that's why I rebuilt it. Good for another few years I bet!

i guess i just got one that slipped through the famous quality control line in China. They must have been on their lunch break. You wouldnt believe the slop in the 2 parts. There isnt a O ring made that would have corrected it.
I just ordered some nice Goodyear hose as suggested up above and it will coil uip just fine vs the cheap plastic hose that came with the compressor.

Nope, but when it does start to bother the wife and kids, that'll do more to motivate me to rebuild it than even a swift kick from Tony_D's size 12's! ;)
