Q:
We just watched this movie last night as a family.
I was excited to see the use of the yellow 280z in the demoliton derby seen.
I liked the movie and now wonder two things about the film makers.
1. because of the extensive use of nice imports throughout the movie they had a fine taste in automobiles
2. someone has a deep down lack of respect for nascar and what would be a better way to make fun of them but to have a beetle win.
haha
Ill add this flick to my collection of car movies.
I also just watched the gumball derby on the speed channel. That was a pretty cool movie with a nice choice of vehicles too.
Does anyone else have any recommendations?

Nice to hear a review on the movie, sounds good, although I'll probably never see it. Not too many high quality car movies unfortunately. One of my favorites is a rare movie based out of HK and thailand called 'legends of speed'. I and read/speak chinese now so I enjoy it more than I used to. It's a goofy movie with mostly the STI imprezas of the early 90's.

Theres a short movie called "the last race" that I thought was actually pretty good as well. A friend gave it to me after they downloaded it. I't 45 min or so, but I honestly thought it was pretty good. No fake crap like fast & furious, just a reasonable but short movie. If you can find it, watch it!
Now back to the herbie movie. I liked it. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but good none the less.

the new Dukes of Hazard movie has some pretty cool car scenes. It is very "cornball', but the southern rock soundtrack and V8 thunder is worth the $20. Plus the new "unrated" version that gets released Tuesday is supposed to have some extra flesh flashing.

"The Gumball RALLY" is my pick for the best all around car movie.
"Bullitt" has the best chase scene of all time, with "Ronin" right there behind it.
The original "Gone In 60 Seconds" has the longest car chase in movie history (around 43 minutes!), and is good to boot.
For old school racing, "LeMans" (w/Steve McQueen) and "Grand Prix" (w/James Garner) are both excellent.
"Smokey and the Bandit" and "the Cannonball Run" are both good, stupid fun.
"Cannonball" (not to be confused with "the Cannonball Run") starring David Carradine is out on DVD now, and is recommended, as is "Death Race 2000", also with David Carradine.

I was knocking around Wal-Mart today looking for some stocking stuffers and found the Smokey and the Bandit Trio on DVD for $10 bucks. It was out in the Bargain Bins. I actually bought two of em. One for the son's stocking and one as a gag gift for the Z club xmas party.

Grand Prix is not on DVD, please find and sign the petition to get it transferred and made available on DVD.
I kick myself in the butt for not buying the Laserdisc when I had the chance. Then I wouldn't have to wait for the DVD to turn it up.
My wife hates that movie. Surround sound on "full", volume UP, and I fast forward through any dialogue... The noises and car scenes in that movie are classic.
Frankenheimer also did Ronin. Another with good sounds...

The original "Gone in 60 Seconds" used to have good sound, until the director's widow decided it was a good idea to change the music and the car sounds for the DVD release. Now instead of the Mustang sounding progressively more ratty as the 45 minute chase continues, it sounds curiously intact the whole way through. Geesh!
Sound is one of the reasons "Victory By Design" on the speed channel is soooo good. It's downright intoxicating!
