Hi folks,
I just got off the phone after having tried to order a Momo Millennium steering wheel. Thy guy asked for the last three numbers on the back of my credit card in the signature area. I told him my credit card customer service advised me to NOT give out that number for purchases. I also saw the same thing on news program a few weeks ago advising the same thing. The steering wheel place would not process my order without it so I canceled my order. So I again called my credit card customer service and they are sticking with their story about not giving out the signature numbers.
What are you guys doing when you purchase parts over the phone? Thanks.

Yo, John....
....I shall follow with interest the responses your inquiry brings.
Earlier this week I ordered from Cooper Nissan some windshield and door window trim clips for the (soon to be repainted) ZX. I gave those three numbers to the parts department.
If they screw me, may they have a better Saturday night than I'm having!

Jim,
Good to hear from you. I think it is weird that companies want the number and credit card companies tell you to not give it out. It will be interesting to see what the rest of us are doing. Looking forward to that Momo steering wheel!! Post some pics of the "new" ZX paint job.

I've relied on the ability to dispute a charge & get my $$ back. Supposedly no limit on the number or $$ amount of the disputes but that's information (frequency & volume) is only verbal from the card co & not confirmed.

LOTS of online places require you to use the 3-4 digit numbers in the back....
Reputible places too....
I had never heard about not using those to make purchases.

it doesnt mean a damn thing. when you hand your CC over @ a store they will often turn yoru card over and type those numbers in. they dont even check the signature anymore, whens the last time you got IDed? i order online all the time, ive givin my CC# out over the phone COUNTLESS times, ive never had any fraudulent charges show up on my statements, but like one of th eabove posters mentioned, if they do show up, i would simply dispute the charges and from what ive heard they dotn even hassle you about it. its becomming more and more common now that they require those numbers, just like your SSN# (assuming your an american), back in the 50's that was a sacred # you didnt give that otu to ANYONE, nowdays they use it on your student ID. if you feel comfortable enough to use your CC over the phone with a company then i honestly dont see the problem providing those numbers. i would be more worried about someone with a scanner monitoring the airwaves listenign to my phone calls and writign my information down, than providing some #'s from my CC to a company that i was paying.

I think they want it to be sure your the owner and have the card in hand and not just the numbers on front. People can get the card number in varius ways but not the code numbers on back. I have ordered many parts online and gave the numbers on back with no ill effects so far. Good practice to go over your statemnet every month to be sure theres nothing there you did not buy so you have time to despute if needed.......

The numbers in the back actually verify that you have access to the card. While your CC info is printed in all sorts of places and can be pulled up by lots of people almost no one can pull up the security code (the three or four digits on the back). Its generally used with phone or online orders when you do not have contact with the person who is giving you the number. When the card company and the news tell you not to give out that number its BS. Its the same as saying that you shouldn't give your credit card number when placing your order. A rumor was started through chain mail a while back that those three numbers will give anyone access to all of you personal info. Any reputable business will cancel an order if you cannot provide all of the information they require. I would have been more worried if they processed your order once you told them you wouldn't give them the security code.

giving out that 3 digit number does nothing to jeopardize the security of your credit card. Whatever company told you not to give it to a business where you are purchasing over the phone or the internet is full of it. Ive been buying stuff from summit for years giving my number to them.

I think I finally figured out one way. My bank uses debit cards
(run thru Visa). I have lousy luck with the magnetic stripes staying good and have to get new ones every so often. Just use a bank debit card
which likely for some might not have a long life anyway.....The numbers keep changing everytime they have to re-issure when the mag. stripe goes bunk....so that's some security that the number isn't out there long anyway. Re-issued cards aren't much but could be worth the security if you were worried about it after using it.

Do NOT think a Band Debit card is a CREDIT CARD!
If there is a DISPUTE over something purchased with a Debit Card, it's YOUR money that is TIED UP while it's in dispute, and after the dispute there is really NO federal requirement for a timetable for those funds to be redeposited into your account!
I WILL NOT USE my ATM/Debit Card on the internet, nor over the phone.
I will, however use my Visa card, and I will use the security numbers. As those above have said, if you are dealing with a REPUTABLE ESTABLISHED BUSINESS, there is no worries with using that---I would be afraid if they accepted it without asking for it or some other form of I.D. to verify your identity. FYI: in many cases the CREDIT CARD COMPANY will send out the code to verify your I.D. and security code on the little box that swipes the cards! Usually (as was said above) it's keyed in at the register, and not on the little card box, but if you have hada fraud alert on your cards, it comes up a LOT!
A warranty by Visa that you are not responsible for a lost or stolen Debit Card is faint reassurance when it's YOUR money tied up forever getting it straightened out, and in many cases, YOU are TOTALLY responsible for the bank FEES from overdrafts run up by the users!
A debit card is NOT covered under the fair credit and reporting act, and you have very little rights if it is stolen, or in the cases of identity theft.
Many times they don't give you any warranty extensions (like my platinum visa does) nor are their any premiums returned to you. If you pay your bill monthly, using a Visa Credit Card is BETTER than using a Visa Debit Card for those reasons alone, in addition to the fact that it's VISA'S money tied up during dispute.
That's like those check draft agreements where people can pay their cable bills every month "directly form your checking account"... Unless it's a sweeper account where the only money that is in there is for the payment of the bills, and not general savings or funmoney, etc, it's a fraud case waiting to happen---if they get access to that number, they clean you out!
And for many here, I doubt they have more than one savings or checking account, so the results would be devestating.
People Are Idiots, Just look around here and you will see!
