Q:

or are we our own worst enemies? I get tired of hearing the closed minded extremely brand loyal assholes on here say Nissan is the only good manufacturer and everything else sucks. Sure a 300ZX Twin Turbo has been my affordable dream car since before I could drive, but I love other cars too. I have had many cars that the above-mentioned people on here would leer at, but have been just as reliable, and as fast as or faster than the Zs I've owned. Sure I love the twin turbos, and love the look of the S30s, but I love the 2 DSMs I've had as well as my, dare I say, Honda CRX.
I just wish people on here would accept other cars as good too...maybe some of the people here slam on DSMs because they're jealous that they don't have all wheel drive turbos with tons of aftermarket support and that their Z is a rusted out piece of **** that's falling apart that can't pass emissions even with the car turned off.
A:

I agree whole heartedly, I currently have a
93 Saturn with 203,000 almost flawless miles
78 Ford F-250 '' ''
78 Datsun 280Z with 105,000 miles
95 Ford Explorer with 125,000 miles
96 Dodge Neon with 67,000 miles
I am currently looking at selling my Z to buy a 98 Mustang GT convertible with a blown motor and doing the swap myself. I guess this is my affordable dream car because I can haul the whole family with the top down, and ourun almost anything else, while being affordable, and getting good fuel mileage.
Black, bumperless, 78 Z with MSA superturbo system, K/N cone filter, ported intake, and exhaust manifolds.....15.9 @87 mph.
A:

All car manufacturers make great, good and bad cars.
Inbreeding is a bad thing so I have a
1971 240Z
1982 Rusted out 280ZX 2+2 Turbo lawn ornament
1988 Mazda 323 Turbo
1988 Ford T-Bird V8
1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8L
All good cars in their own way.
I have never really thought about what my dream car would be because I like so many different aspects about cars that I'd probably have to have three different vehicles which together would comprise my dream car.

There are are three or four guys here in my town with 11 second dsms dont get me wrong they can be fast but I swear they only drive these cars 2 months out of the year cause there always breaking drivetrain parts. Im feeling pretty good tonight about my 300zx though cause I raced and beat a 03 supercharged cobra today:). I own a 85zx na, an 86zxt and a 87 IROC camaro. Also have a 93 eclipse bout to be gone.

I recognize the fact that there other good cars out there, but for me the bang for the buck factor doesnt get any higher than teh Z cars. I've known many people into mustangs, camaros, and DSM's, and all spend mega bucks to go fast, where as with a Z car, basically all you need is a turbo swap, an intercooler and maybe some injectors. that and tehse cars HANDLE too.
SUre hondas offer great bang/buck ratio, but in the end, they are just FWD econoboxs on steroids. RWD or nothing for me, as far as performance goes.....

A:

Um, you can put the same amount of money that you would into a Z swap, into some bolt ons for a GT Mustang, or Z28 Camaro, or FWD/AWD turbo DSM and go faster than you would in a Z. But the Zs do look pretty good :)
A:

I always get flammed whenever i say anything knocking the Z down on this forum......People think these cars are the ****, when they are a great driving/fun to drive car. I love every minute in my 90, and i hope the 85 is the same when i get done building it. But nothing beats the roar of my vette at WOT, not to mention you can physically feel the fiberglass start to lift around 130mph...My vette is the only car that still scares me at speeds of 100mph+...and i've been driving it for 6 years now....And i've maxed out my moms mini van...Ha...
My dream car when i was young was a first gen viper.......I'd still like to have one but it isnt on my list as much anymore.
As of right now, im really lusting over a c5 vette.....I would be in one at the moment but no one was interested for my 90 NA with only 36k miles on it at the time, for any amount over 5k....And the car was damn near perfect....
So i kept it, gonna drive it, get my $ back out of it. Maybe do a turbo swap one day. Or if a buyer comes along i'll have my c5...Maybe one of the last years of a c4...=D
Btw, i've enjoyed the honda's i've driven....I need to find an early 90s accord for a beater. I had a first gen Eclipse....I hated it....Although i bought it for $150 from a friend with a clean title. The only thing i have ever gotten rid of that i wish i kept was my suzuki 750gsx bike...How i miss it....

Loyalty to a brand name is the cause of sheer ignorance.
The 240Z is by far the most reliable vintage sports car you can buy. Plus, it is very flexible in terms of modification and has decent aftermarket support. Not only that, it is an icon in automotive history. That being said, it's not the best car in the world. When a car is this fun to drive, you can sure tolerate a lot more crap!
I have an appreciation for all kinds of cars, but more specifically sporty European cars. My knowledge isn't limited to Z cars or Nissans--although I've loved Nissans since childhood. I encounter brand name defenders all the time. It's just stupid. A good car is a good car no matter what kind of badge it carries.
The only reason I wouldn't drive a Honda, Mitsubishi, or Subaru is because I don't want to be associated with their sort of crowd. I'd have to say the same about Ferrari and Porsche cars too (even though there are exceptions to the rule). At least people don't have anything bad to say about Datsun . . . other than the fact that it's Datsun. Seriously, would you rather drive a shiny S30 or in a Subaru Impreza? There's an unknown factor that comes into play there!
People defend this cool factor instead of using pure performance figures (or their own driving skills) to justify their claims.

Norm, is you Mazda FWD or AWD....in other words, GT or GTX?? I used to have a 90 323 N/A, and was planning on swapping in the FWD BPT, that was until the motor blew up, and I didn't have enough money, so I bought a $500 Z (that's how I got into Z's.....)

It's a GT FWD with 199,432 miles on it.
No rust and never wrecked.
The car still runs great even with a blown head gasket!
I've driven it three years with the gasket blowing into the coolant sytem and the thing still runs 10.02 @ 70.3 mph in the 1/8 mph with the clutch slipping the whole time in 3rd gear!
If it had a new clutch and I fixed the gasket leak she'd probably run 9.7's which ain't bad for a totally stock car. If I had some extra money laying around I'd rebuild it into a high 8 second 1/8 mile ride as it is really a good sleeper car.

My post listed my affordable dream car as a convertible GT Mustang. If money weren't an issue, I would want a supercharged 5.0 A.C. Cobra kit, a 62 Ferrari 250 GTO, and a 68 convertible Pontiac GTO amoung a few others. I don't limit myself to what one car maker has put out. That is rather like people who vote party lines in the elections, they may be picking the second best choices.

Mine was also rust free, and never wrecked. I didn't know it at the time, but it had a bad rad. cap, which led to it's demise. Long story short, at approx. 298,328 miles, it overheated, warped the head, and cracked the block.....and it still drove almost 5 miles to the mechanic. I bought the car for $200, so I didn't bother fixing it, especially since I had the chance to get my first Z (I had wanted one for a few years before that)...

Started in 1981 when I turned 16, my Old Man "gave" me his old 1972 Chevy Impala. I put in a battery, did a tune up, changed the oil and bingo I had wheels. I made 70 bucks a week baggin groceries at Ingle's Supermarket, it cost me $50 bucks a week to keep gas in the lead sled.
Here is the rest of my list that I can remember:
72 VW Superbeetle (college car)
77 VW Rabbit (wife's car when we got married in 85)
77 Honda Civic (only ran for a couple weeks, blown headgasket, junked)
84 Olds Cutlass Supreme (V-6 Automatic, total POS)
1980 Kawasaki 600 CSR streetbike
1990 Toyota Corolla (To date the only new vehicle ever owned)
1991 B150 Dodge Conversion Van (wife wanted a mini-van)
69 Chevy Truck, stepside bed, in-line 6, total rust bucket but ran great
69 Chevy Truck, long bed with 350 V8 (best damn truck I ever owned)
72 Chevy Truck, still restoring this one for my oldest son
1990 Mazda 626 sedan, 4cyl with 5 speed
1978 Ford Bronco (used as a mudder when the boys had ATV's)
1999 F250 Super Duty 4 door truck with 7.3 liter diesel (GREAT Truck)
1997 Ford Thunderbird (Wife's current ride)

Last, but not least
1978 Datsun 280 Z
