What about the Datsun 210?

General Chat

Q:

In my neighborhood is a forlorn, well used Datsun 210. I don't know anything about the model so any info would be nice. It's at a used dealership sitting outside the gate with no "For Sale" sign.
I'm thinking it needs a home but I know nothing about it.

Yea but how can you turn away from an orphaned Datsun? They just tug at the heart strings.

terrible cockroach of a car. funk factor is 8.5 but the fun factor is 1.0 or less. if i remember it had an overheating 50hp engine and drove like an oxcart.
A:

Well - other than that Mrs. Lincoln: how was the play?
I take it you don't recommend a 210?
I did wonder if there was anything to them or just a barely there econobox.

up to you, dude. they are an econobox in the original sense of the word. slow, uncomfortable, feel like a powered red wagon. i guess they could have a cult appeal as an alternative to a similar vintage toyoya corona.
tou should not expect a 'wow' expression from the folks you meet if you drive it.

My wife had a 79 210, she loved it. Ran forever, until a city truck hit her.

Sounds like someone who is looking at clouds... You could just as well say it looks like an atomic cockroach. Now don't ask me what those hubcaps look like,

Didn't monster garage jam a VQ35DE into an old honey bee?
the 210 will probably get in excess of 40mpg on the highway with low 30's around town. gutless, wheezing 67hp 1.4L pushrod motor.

I might ask about it at the lot just for grins, but it looks like too much of a worthless project.
I did want an opinion and that I got very well.
Thanks for the input guys.

If you looking for a Winter beater it would fit. Does get good gas mileage. Don't know if you get snow or ice around where you live but if you put some weight in the back and some snow tires on it would be okay.
Had a 77 280Z and two 70 510 Wagons once upon a time...

My roommate in college had one and it was a great little car. I would luv to find one around here and have some fun with it. Let us know if they quote you a price and how the deal works out.
Good luck.

I have an 81 Datsun 210 2 door hatchback that my aunt bought brand new.. She drove it two miles a day to work and back.. Otherwise, it sat all the time.. She drove a Z on the weekends.. I think it's a neat little car and it is built well.. I think it was better than the other compact cars of the time.. This car gets over 40mpg and it is an automatic.. The lowrider guys love to look at this car and get ideas but we don't want that.. This car runs and drives as new.. The car is baby blue.. My aunt had to wait 3 months for this car because she wanted the automatic and not one dealer had an automatic or that crazy baby blue color on the lot.. It has a face plate for where the optional radio would be.. I might sell it for the right price.. I do not think anyone will find a 210 with lower miles than this car.

Shoot me an email with pics and price. I am definitely interested. FWIW, I will be traveling on business to the Northeast region next week, I might could work out a visit to see it in person.
Just let me know......

Sure thing GT, just give me a little time to get to it.. The car is blocked in by some big garbage trucks and dumpsters in my yard.. I'll have to move a few of them to get close up photos.. I think I have all the original books and paperwork, plus the original title somewhere.. Where are you going to be in the northeast next week? The car is in New Jersey.. Email me if you like and we can go into details.. I can also send you some photos of the car when it was brand new as well.
A:

Fugly styling (sorry, nothing about it looks Z), uncomfortable (flat vinyl seats), slow (0-60 in the teens), and a nerd factor that requires a pocket protector and black glasses with taped temples.
Black, bumperless, 78 Z with MSA superturbo system, K/N cone filter, ported intake, and exhaust manifolds.....15.9 @87 mph.
A:

Just get to it when convenient and send me the pics and pricing via email. My email address is on my profile. Next week I will be in the Philly and DC area Wed evening thru Friday. I may have to stay over the weekend for more meetings and some training the following week, so I could have the weekend to do some traveling around. Can't make any promises right now but even if next week doesn't work out I will be back in the area in the coming weeks, the company I work for has a corportate office about 2-3 hours outside DC.
Let me take alook at your current pics when you get them and we can go from there.
BTW, shoot me an email using my link in the profile so I will have your email address. You don't have one listed on your profile.

Snow and ice in Houston?
Real snow about once in 12 years: flacky ice crystals in suburban areas - gone in about 6 to 12 hours if that much.
Had tree days of snow (about two inches) in the "Blizzard of '73" - just about shut down the city and I'm not kidding about only 2 inches if that much.
Ice - now and then on sub 32 nights on the overpasses and elevated freeways.
For the last 10 years we get about 3 hours of winter.
Snow and ice = when the snowcone truck rolls over.
