Hi Guys,
My '93 T-Bird has been a great winter car for the past 3 years (Can't drive my 280zx; too much snow!). Unfortunately, something has gone wrong with the heater/heat system.
Here's the situation:
The heat stops coming out when the car isn't moving! Once I'm driving down the road, the heat comes back on. Even after a good 20-30 mins straight on the road, if I stop for more than a couple minutes, cold air starts blowing out again. It's crazy (especially because it's well below freezing here). Keep in mind that the heater fan is blowing just a strong as ever, wether it's hot or cold air.
This T-bird has a climate control system, I'm not sure if that is relevent.
Please, someone with knowledge of this problem, HELP ME!!! I'm freezing!!
Thanks guys

does your car overheat @ all during this (or get hotter?) i had a problem like that one time, it was with a 4.3 s-series pickup. problem was the intake gasket was leaking, and coolant was escaping. so when the coolant level got low the truck woudl overheat and then cool down (dunno why) when coolant went through the system. but it would heat up then cool down. well whenever it was heating up the heater wouldnt work. but when it was cooling down the heater would work.
so its either a problem like that or a bad heatercore. dunno, i mean its a pretty simple device really.. hot water flows through it, a fan blows air across it and thus you get hot air comming into your vents. so if your getting air but its nto hot, then the water in the heatercore isnt hot for some reason or another.

I have to concur...low coolent will do it every time.

As others mentioned, it could be low coolant. It could be a vacuum operated switch not having enough vacuum at idle.

Might wanna check the thremostat to see if is stuck open. Also as mentioned abve check the vaccum line going through the fire wall for cracks. With it working only at higher rpm's sounds like a water flow problem to me so you might try remove the heater hose lines and flushing the core with a water hose. ......

should you flush radiators backwards or forwards?

If it has the 3.8 you are looking at headgasket. Engine is pumping air into your cooling system. A way to check this is see if the coolent gets pumped overboard via the reservior. This happened on my 3.8 Taurus, it had the exact same symtoms.

"What is leaking NOW?"

What eventually happened to your Taurus? I do have the 3.8. I thought if the head gasket was a issue, I would see a difference in my exhaust?
I noticed today that the temp guage did rise up past half way quickly, then dropped back down after a few seconds. What could this mean?
Anyway, thanks for the help guys.
I don't tip

If its the head gasket it will be losing coolant, also check when you first start car the radiater hose will get tight with pressure within a minute of starting.
