A Great Day for Driving...(long)

General Chat

Q:

Three and a half weeks ago my wife and I had our first child. A beautiful little girl that doesn't sleep very much, but I love her anyway. Needless to say I haven't had much time for the car. Today I woke up to some absolutely gorgeous autumn weather in the San Francisco Bay. I threw in some new shifter bushings last week and did some upkeep engine tuning but didn't have time to get the car out, so today I decided to throw the K&N's back on the Webers and take her up to my office since I had a couple of things to do. On the way home I stopped to visit my brother and to take him for a quick ride on an old favorite road in my home town and man the car was running really quick, quicker than ever. The tires were warm and the road was just cold enough for them to really stick. My brother was talking about how much faster the Z was on the twisties than his buddy's Mini S and WRX STI, and it was definitly the fastest I had run in ANY car. I dropped him off at his house and started the treck home on I280 and decided to take one of my favorite runs up Woodside Road in Woodside. All the way through downtown and up to the start of the county road some jackass in a Volvo Turbo was up my ass through the residential areas trying to get to the fun part faster than I was. I prefer to respect the people who live/bicycle/horseback ride in their neighborhood so I was keeping it at 35 and he was getting on my nerves. As soon as I got to the big flashing sign that says winding roads ahead, a sweet black 2006 997 Carrera S pulls in front of me and nails it up the mountain, I dropped her into second and bury it WOT up after him, the guy could drive and knew the road as well as I did. Damn the new Porsche is a sweet looking ride and fast. I was astonished as I actually caught and chased him for about a mile until we hit slower traffic and then just cruised up to Four Corners to the general store where he was also going (leaving that pesky Volvo way behind). I went in and bought an ice tea and walk out where the Porsche owner is sitting in front of my car looking at it. I said "how's it going?" and he asked if I was the one driving this Z. I said yes and he says "that car is REALLY quick, were you pulling on me?" I said "I did pull on you a little but not to much and I was running pretty hard." He said, "Man I was on it what do you have in it?" That started a good 30 minute conversation about cars, motorcycles (he used to ride in the area like I did), track days, kids (he just had one too), and a bunch of stuff we had in common. Really cool guy (I have had some really good experiences with Porsche owners). I took off south as he gave me a thumbs up and drove HWY 35 all the way to HWY 9 behind a Caterham (another awesome car!) at a good but not insane clip and then hit the downhill at HWY 9 pretty hard since there was hardly anyone else on the road, it was a nice clean run. Today was an amazing drive, one of the best I've had in a while (possibly ever) and I was very surprised at how well the old girl was running today bieng able to catch an 06 Carrera with a good driver behind the wheel. Just thought I'd share a good day.
BTW for those who didn't see the random pic I posted a while back here is the birth annoucement I made for my daughter.

Congratulations on the new baby! Sounds like you've just had a really awsome day! Either I've had experiences with the wrong porsche drivers or I'm living in the wrong area and I'm glad to hear that there ARE good ones out there. I didn't know those roads were around San Fransisco I'll have to ask for directions next time I go down there.

Again, Congratulations. Back in the late 70's I lived in Mill Valley, Ca. for a few months prior to graduate school. I was driving a 67 MGB at the tme and loved going out PCH1 to Stinson Beach. That ride was especially beautiful at night with the top down and some Doobie Brothers in the 8-track!!!!!!! Ah, glory day, yeah they'll pass you by in the wink of a young girl's eye. Best wishes to you and your family.

Keep that baby in mind as your running her deep into a canyon corner.....i'll bet you lift a bit. I would love to have areas like that near me to go blow off steam.

CKelly, yeah I know what you mean, I ran it hard chasing the Porsche because of the moment and a section of road I have been driving for 13 years, no cross streets, driveways, surprises, etc. but on 35 & 9 I definitely lifted as I approached the limit, and in the past I wouldn't even think about it. Life does have it's moments, just have to recognize them and remember. Thanks for the comments on Alyssa. She really is a cute kid, who will know everything I can teach her about cars, without letting Mom know ;). She thinks cars are for boys, and forgets that she used to drive an Eclipse with a five speed which was one of the things that I really liked about her.
