510 wagon rear end question

General Chat

Q:

Does anyone know if the rear end chunk from a Datsun 620 truck will fit in the case of a 510 wagon rear axle? I think I am gonna wear out my rear end soon with this Ka24 power. Paul

I'm not sure. You might want to check cause I think the roadster guys use them as well. Maybe a WHOLE rear swap?? Look to the 200SX as well. The early wedge shaped S10 body.

510 wagons are solid rears.

521 pickup is IDENTICAL, save for the 4.37 gearing.
The 620 can be made to work---I believe they are all H165 Rearends.
A Ford 9" custom-cut isn't all that expensive. I know people with VG30's in their Wagons and they are running the stock rearend. If you do stupid things, anything will break.

They are H-190's, I had one I know!

in the 620? or the 521?
The regular 510 had an R160, and I'm almost positive the Station Wagon is an H165, same as the 521 Pickup. The running gear is identical and they share the same FSM in most cases (510 and 521)
Kinda confused by what you are saying, z240dude...
Anyway, as long as the axle length is correct, anything can fit under anything else if you make the perches compatible.
Hence my comment on the narrow Ford 9"...
I think it's academic anyway, the KA24 ain't all that bad. Not as bad as a VG30 at least!

In my 1979 620 pickup, sorry for the mixup. It had the optional 4.37 gearing in it too.

Thanks for the info. Excuse my gear ratio ignorance but when you say 4.37 gearing how does that compare to the dime ratio? I really need to learn about gear ratios. I would love to get a higher geared rear for her if possible. I am really planning ahead because the rear was already a bit tired when I had the L-16 in her. I am about to do a bunch of rear suspension work to the car so if I find a suitable replacement I will install it when I have the axle dropped. Thanks, Paul
