Q:

Hey guys, anyone have any stories about this badass car. I'm really into these old japanese cars, and i want to know if im going to be wasting my time looking at some of these cars. I just want to know basically engine specs and reliability, and if anyone has owned this car. Thank alot.

I'd reckon most have been abused by drivers for the last 30 years, or abused by rust for the last 30 years, or both. I just NEVER see one on the road.
My brother owned a '74 GT and didn't keep it very long. I don't recall why. It was a really neat Japanese import in its day.

no way man, ive got a prime canidate that says theres "no rust" which means theres little, but obviously there is rust. And the engine has been completely redone. I was thinking about (since it already has EFI) i would look at turbo options. It could be a fun project.

I KNOW!! hahah arent those sweet.
It just hit me though....
if there are any mopar fans, their gonna be offended....
but the side shots of this car make it look almost identical to a 70's barracuda that had been squished together....
....coincidence?

I also like the RA25 GT hatch. Looked a little like a mustang fastback but smaller.

There aren't very many around anymore. The guy who lived down the street from me when I was a kid had a black 75 gt hatch, it was sweet. Always wanted one and have not seen another one like it since. Like my Z better though.

Those are pretty common sight here in california. Funny I was thinking about buying a celica fastback lately but the only thing that stopping me from doing it is because of the smog issue.
A:

I'm in CA too, I was talking about the 73-75 GT's. There are alot of other later model celica's around though.

There is a 77 GT up my street that was for sale, but he took the sign off. $750, and it is smogged. Still thinking about offering him $500 for it.

I think you'd like the early 70's better but here's a few pics of what they look like (sharp in my opinion). I still like my Datsun 510 better, but I would definately not mind having this one too!
According to the Bay Area (CA) ad:
1973 Celica ST with 18RG engine (stock). Very very clean, no rust, no dents and no dings. Clean title and currently registered.

Check with a guy running around SanDiego with a white 73...
Car runs sub 12 second 1/4 mile times, and is really sanitary.
My bud Drew out in Alabama has a 73 GTV (RHD Car from the JDM) with the 2TG bored and stroked to 2.2L running 304 and 310 TRD cams....
Yeah, they can be pretty badass, ignorance of other marques prevades this site, along with rampant xenophobia regarding non-datsuns...
I come here becasue I'm a CAR guy who happens to like Datsuns...
I got photos of Ryan's car if you e-mail me with something appropriate in your e-mail subject line. Otherwise it gets deleted without even begin read. I never read stuff that says "Hi" in the subject line for instance...

Is that the Celica you're refering to in buying? Have you seen it in person? It looks nice from the pics...but I don't know much about that 80's engine in there. Maybe you should check out a Toyota board or two to find out more info about it. Good luck if it's the one you plan on buying.
A:

I might go look at it, it's local for me. I doubt I'll buy, my wife would $hit if I got another toy.

The 18RG was the engine that came in that car, the 4AG was the 80's version in the AE86 brought to fame by initial D. The 18RG was the engine in the ST and GT models back in the day.

"I am the Devil"
I e-mailed both of these to my Celica Crazy buddy in Alabama. Poor Bastard called me and said I was the Antichrist because he's trying to save money for downpayment on his house, and now I throw these two up there and in his words "I could buy them both and still have money leftover, you bastard!"

ST and GTV came with the 2TG, not the 18RG. The big 2-liter was reserved for the GT model alone, after 73. Before 73, the differentiated with GT and GTV, along with ST which could have some of the treats below....
I had a 76 GT with the 18RG-R out of a 1973 GSS... 145 hp stock.
That car lost me my license, and got another guy kicked out of the USAF!
It was evil. Made all the right noises, but wasn't particularly fast (like that S2000 posted somewhere...)
The early cars in the JDM were 1600's... I mean, you go exotic, and you can find the T-engined (1400CC) cars with drum brakes all round, or better yet, one with a 2T-BR, a dual two barrel downdraught carburetion system that made Toyota Techs in New Jersey's Emissions Stations FREAK OUT because it was ALL FACTORY, had all the right Toyota Stickers on it, and was something they NEVER saw before...

His 73 GTV is still in bondo and primer spots that it was shipped from Japan in back in 1989...
He will find one reason or another why it "can't happen" rather than why it should happen, even thought the silver car is EVERYTHING he has ever said he WANTED to do to his car since I've known him!
I got fed up with his all-talk-always-an-excuse back then. He showed up at the shop one night, where I was helping another guy (Rick) install the Disc Brake rear from a Corolla into his 71 Celica. He was all upset that I didn't call him and tell him I was doing it. He talked about doing it for 5 years, Rick asked me what he needed to do it, I told him, and when he got the parts---I helped him install it.
Like I've said, I won't DO the work anymore, but I will show you how to do it if you show the effort. Rick made one helluva car before I left. 2.2L 2TG powered 4wheel disc brakes, man that car was a hoot.
But he could never catch my Z with triple blowthrough Mikuinis running 21psi...he he he!
I digress...
Seriously, I just send these posts to him there in Alabama just to piss him off, and tweak him on how little he's actually DONE in the 20+ years I've known him. I mean, what do you do with a guy who criticizes cars at a car show when he's never put forth the effort to make on himself? I usually say "What color is YOUR car, man?" That usually shuts him up...
I figure he will die soon, and I will get his Celica and his Fairlady ZX, and then they will be completed. Morbid bastard, eh?

TonyD,
I would beg to differ with you as my '72 ST still has its original 18RC engine in it!
In '71 U.S. spec they used the 8RC. My Celica was originally bought in Seattle,Wa. on 08/18/72 and only made it out to the east coast 2 years ago. It has 82,7xx miles on it and according to the 2nd owner (I am 4th) half of the mileage was acquired by towing behind a motor home and I have the A-frame trailer hitch to back that story up. If you want to see more pics of it and my Z cars go to:
http://www.classic-celica.com/
and then click on "Hot Celicas Gallery" and search for 'daddsun'
Here's some pics of my '72 Celica ST:
This is a pic of the 16x8 Epsilon mesh wheel (currently on my '81 280ZX) installed as a joke but also to see if they would fit; they do and no rubbing!
This is how mine should look in a few years:
This is a pic of two that weren't treated very well (found behind a body shop about 20 miles from my home)

Might be one of those JDM things, that is where I had most of my exposure to them. Is is a pre-72 thing maybe? The GTV my bud has is a 2T-G...
I'm linking your post to him in e-mail for more torture! Muahahaha!

Tony,
I think it might be a JDM thing but I will check the Brian Long Celica book. If your friend doesn't have it it's a must have with lots of good pics and info. on all the JDM Celica's and other markets as well. As usual the other markets got the better engines (sounds like the Z car story?) but I guess we should be happy that it was sent here in the first place.
Another torturous thing to do is visit the Yahoo Japan auctions website and look at the wonderful cars and parts that we cannot access (at least not without a friend in Japan).
thanks for the comments...and there's alot more info. on these cars at:

Steve,
Let me know and I'll try to get as many as I can in one place at one time!
Here's the location list:
2003 350Z--Florida slumbering in a garage w/ 24k on it.
1991 Mustang GT--sits next to the 350Z in the garage waiting to come out and play w/128k on it.
the next three are at AAFB (unfortunately outside) :
1972 Toyota Celica
1977 Datsun 280Z
1978 Datsun 280Z
1987 Toyota Supra--with my father in Baltimore getting the daily driver abuse; in his defense his '77 280Z is at the slow mechanic's garage in Bryans Road.
1986 Nissan 300ZX--also at the slow mechanic's garage awaiting a rear end swap.
the next four at home with me:
1970 Datsun 240Z--in the garage awaiting a restoration
1978 Datsun 280Z--sleeps under the car cover and needs a bit more help to be roadworthy (heater, fenders, fuel pump relay)
1981 Datsun 280ZX--sleeps at the end of the driveway and gets rotated for semi daily driver duty until the weather gets crappy.
1978 Datsun 280Z--this one has been pressed back into daily driver status until the '86 is back; it's a good way for this one to earn its keep after having dumped $1500 into new floors, floor supports, trapezoid frame rail repair. I'll probably end up selling this one since it has a sunroof and I don't want to tackle having that job done although I have the roof from another '78 280Z ready to go.
1982 Datsun 280ZX--this one is still in Huntington Beach, Ca. waiting for me to pick it up sometime around December 21 or 22 and then a quick drive across country to Florida for Christmas/ New Years before heading north back to D.C. for the next installment of UMUC (21 credits).
Somebody help and buy one of these cars! Twelve cars is getting a bit ridiculous. Unless you know of a barn somewhere?
