Q:

Click here for Jeremy Clarkson's review of the Bugatti Veyron.
The things he mentions in his article are mind boggling.
Volkswagen has created an engineering masterpiece with this car.
I can't believe it meets the new European emissions while still producing 1000hp from a W16 quad-turbo. I couldn't even imagine a single Audi V8 with aftermarket twin turbos getting close to passing emissions over there!
It's another huge step for automotive engineering . . . until the Italian project for the 1200hp car is completed.
I think the Oil Age will go out with a huge bang!

I love the old classic cars. I love the syle when done right. I like a retro look, when done right.
This isn't right.
I appreciate the signature Bugati grille - but - it just does not translate well with the modern "Euro-egg" style.
But then, I'm not in the market for one. Yeah, like I could even afford the down payment on the steering wheel.

Overwrought and overweight, typical German overengineering. I bet a McLaren F1 would hand this pig its arse at just about any track except a huge top-speed oriented test circuit. They stupidly set an absolute hp goal rather than a hp/weight goal for this monstrosity. Pretty much the antithesis of the minimalist Bugatti racers of old.
A:

The Mclaren F1 is known to be a car that handles very poorly....Jeremy Clarkson HATES it
Seems that he loves the Buggati though, which probably means it handles well, jeremy never gives a good review if something handles poorly.

I love Clarkson! This guy is hilarious. And for all you boo hoo guys out there thumbing your nose at him for his review, he knows what hes talking about too. Yes its hideous, no its not really a drivers car but you have got to respect the engineering. They spent years building this car and it turned out pretty good in my opinion.

>And for all you boo hoo guys out there thumbing your nose at him for his
> review, he knows what hes talking about too
He says the same damn thing about every car he reviews. His review of EVERY car:
1) Ever since I heard about it last year, I wasn't expecting much...
2) but this thing is amazing.. just MIND blowing... I mean it's like it's on steriods!
3) It's everything that... a Volvo/Ford/Vauxhall is..... NOT.
4) It reminds me of an empty bread box.
5) Overall, it's just good. It will appeal to some of you.
The guy is a journalist, not a professional driver. His job is to make good TV, so he gets you excited (see (2)), then he lets you down with concern (see (4)) then his recommendation isn't too good or too harsh (see (5)). It's a formula! I'll say it once more: it's a FORMULA!
It's designed to be that way, it's a journalistic show. They aren't there to recommend cars or really review them, they are there to SHOWCASE them and get you drooling. Otherwise the manufacturers wouldn't want their car on the show.
A:

Just for fun, I played find the dots with my own bookmarks:
1) "It all started when Ferdinand Piëch, the swivel-eyed former boss of Volkswagen, bought Bugatti and had someone design a concept car. “This,” he said, “is what the next Bugatti will look like.”" <-- history introduction
2) "Utterly, stunningly, jaw droppingly brilliant." <-- raving over greatness, drool comments
3) "So technically it is a car. And yet it just isn’t." <-- the "signature" negative
4) "Not quiet, though. The engine sounds like Victorian plumbing — it looks like Victorian plumbing as well, to be honest — and the roar from the tyres was biblical." <-- comparison to something archaic
5) "Other cars are small guesthouses on the front at Brighton and the Bugatti is the Burj Al Arab. It makes even the Enzo and the Porsche Carrera GT feel slow and pointless. It is a triumph for lunacy over common sense" <--- OK, so this is one car where he finally deviated and he actually LIKES the car. :) Formula slightly broken! He rarely does this.
A:

Now I would agree with you if you were talking about Motor Trend, but in my experience the British press is all too honest. For example:

http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,12529-1772795,00.html
Its actually only American cars that suck... apparently?
All kidding aside, he's driven just about every vehicle known to man, does indeed know how to drive a car and I'd wager has more insight and experience into the quality of many different cars than anybody on this board. I will almost surely never get to own a Bugatti, but I can at least dream about it being really cool at night.

Yeah, they do hate american cars. I meant just Jeremy Clarkson. The rest of the press might actually produce something unique. :)
A:

Clarkson hates American cars!?
He loves the C6 Corvette and the Dodge Viper. He also adores the Cadillac CTS-V.
He just dislikes crummy cars in general. He was the biggest critic of Rover cars in his country. That is why many people blame him for Rover's bankrupcy. (He actually retaliated with an article outlining the exact reasons for Rover's demise.)
To all the Veyron critics, I'd like to point out that not too many race cars in race trim will barely break 200mph. (Especially now with two chicanes on the Mulsanne Straight.) For what it is, the Veyron is a bargain at $1.2 million.
The answer to how well the car handles should be answered on this seaon of Top Gear. We'll see if the Veyron can beat the Maserati MC12 as the fastest around their test track.

$1,418,103.75 and you can go, what, 231mph. And if you stick the key in and deploy the spoinler in a stowed state so you can go slightly unstable, but get another 22mph to 253mph?
Hmmm....
lets see....
$22,256.00 / 174mph= $127.90 per MPH
$1,418,103.75 / 253mph= $5,605.15 per MPH ($6,138.98 per MPH using it's stability features)
Looks like a reworked 1976 280Z 2+2 is a better deal, and I'm stable at 174mph and happy doing it. Hell, add another 10K for the turbocharged engine and I'll crack 200, and be within stone's throw of his stable top speed, too!

Clarkson hates american cars? Well thats true (as do I in most cases) but he has his reasons.
He drove the Ford GT and absolutely LOVED it..
He then proceeded to buy a Ford GT
Ford GT then had to go to the dealership something like SEVEN times for stuff to get fixed.
Clarkson returns the GT to Ford and refuses to get another one.

1100 hp supras are a dime a dozen.
Well not really, but close.

Those 1000hp supras also use a turbo the size of a basketball to make that power. When you factor in that by the time the supra is getting on boost from a rolling run the Bugatti has probably already opened a quarter mile on it and still running away. Supras are dyno queens by the time they get to that level.

A:

Shows how much you know about supras.
Yes the buggatti will definatly out accelerate a supra and spank it in the top end. (hello huge engine and 4wd).
But most supras are not dyno queens.
My buddies supra did 10.8 @ 129mph on street tires on his original single turbo setup at only 689 horses to the wheels.
Sure is a dyno queen....

Hey, Tyson... read what I posted! 1000hp is not the same as 689hp. Your buddy is a smart guy, and it sounds like he built a good setup. I didn't say every supra is a dyno queen, I said when you build them to the same hp level of the Bugatti they are. I love supras, I think they are very cool, I just think it is silly to build something to a level that requires drag slicks to even initiate on boost acceleration, unlike your buddies tastefully upgraded Supra.

I would argue that fact! 170 is a two finger deal with one hand in my S30...
In EITHER case, besides GOING DEAD STRAIGHT I doubt there is ANY deviation from that which would remotely resemble "handling" at that speed.
That goes for just about anything at that speed without wings.
There is no "handling" at that speed, nobody is cornering much tighter than a 200 foot radius turn...if that.
Nah, I'd say at 170, mine handles just as good as that one.

By "handling" at that speed i guess handling has more to do with if your car is going to stay on the road, and if you make ANY wheel movements you dont spin out, or flip or lose control.
I imagine this piece of a car can make good (relatively for this speed) handling.
Unless you are a huge car guru and have devoted a HELLA of a lot time to your car, and gone on long straights and actually performed this feat of which we are speaking.

Tony, even if your Z can crack 200mph it is still 50mph off the pace of the Veyron. 200mph supercars are now dime a dozen. Even the cheapest Ferrari you can buy will go 197mph now. Even the new M5 will go beyond 200mph without breaking a sweat! And that is a four door saloon car! I think you pay the extra million or so for that extra 50mph. (You should be the best to know how difficult it is to achieve that final 50mph.)
I think people will buy the Veyron because it is the "fastest car in the world." Also for the sheer acceleration a W16 quad turbo engine can provide. It's the first production car to crack the 400kph mark too. (It's ironic that this car came out after the fact the BAR-Honda F1 car broke that mark too.)
VW is not going to make any profit off the car either. They spent something like $700M but only expect to crack even. That's why I think this car is a bargain. (The McLaren F1 was a bargain for what you got as well.)
