Q:
Im shopping around for head units this christmas. Im trying to get a good one. Does anyone know of a good head unit that has a 5band or 7band equalizer and is a cd player? I might power my front speakers (Memphis 15-MC60 55W RMS) with it.
Thanks

I work in the best buy car audio dpt n always followed car audio so i know a good bit. Without hesitation i recomment alpine over any brand you can buy for under $500. They have the best sound quality, very reliable and durable (had mine slip off the passenger seat in my 75 onto bare metal floorboards more then 5 times n not a problem yet) easiest to adjust, they let you adjust frrquencies on you balance n tremble and on the higher end models theres this technology where you go onto the alpine website, enter your car in and it will give you somethin to burn onto a cd rw that you upload to the headunit that tunes the unit for your car. such as turning the back passenger speaker higher or some stuff like that. always thought itd b cool to upload and see how it performs. They dont have excess menus to navigate or small annoying buttons. They are straight foward to use and dont see why you wouldnt be satisfied. A side note if you dont take my opinion at least stay away from kenwood. With their newer series of headunits theres something in the lazer technology that burns cds and ruins them therefore we've been having quite a bit of returns. Just my two cents but in the end i would recommend alpine bar none.

I've had my kenwood EZ500 for a little over a year, no problems yet. And it looks better than most alpines i've seen. Just my opinion.

if your not a dum ass youll go get an alpine!!!!!!

Alpine is a bit ricer though, it is a VERY good brand and arguably the best but so many ricers also use Alpine gear it's not really the flagship audio brand people claim.
That being said, screw what ricers use and get what's best for you just whatever you do dont put damn alpine stickers on your windscreen!

I personally don't view stereo units as "rice", "not rice". Thats for crappy body work, and useless performance add ons.

All these people who are saying Alpine is the best... I wouldn't listen to them. True Alpine makes a great stereo, and their quality is excellent but they are not the only choice out there. Eclipse decks in my opinion have the best cd/dvd read quality and are going to give you the cleanest sound from a CD. Blaupunkt is going to be what you want if you listen to the radio alot. I have routinely owned Kenwood decks and have found them to be of excellent quality and I have stuck to the brand, that is after my Eclipse deck was stolen. Your best bet is going to be to go to several of your local stereo shops and listen to the same CD or radio station on the different decks, ask alot of questions, play with them and see which have the best control interface, write down the model # of the deck you want and then go home and buy it off the internet. I usually save between $20 to $100 by buying my decks off internet warehouses compared to audio specialists.

Crutchfield gives good service but you can beat the price if you can live with less service.

Crutchfield is a great tool for researching but I wouldn't buy anything from them, as Junkman said, usually too expensive. I usually do a google search and it comes up with a list of prices, usually thats where you can find the best price. For example:
Kenwood Excelon KDC-X589
Crutchfield price $249.99 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Y6asLfRJILN/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=113KDCX589
Google search - lowest price $148! http://froogle.google.com/froogle_cluster?q=Kenwood+Excelon+KDC-X589&pid=1886608331511762563&oid=11160731401761073532&btnG=Search+Froogle&lmode=&addr=&scoring=p&hl=en
I know the $148 one is the older version, but the main difference I can see is the styling. This would be my recommendation if your looking for a flexible head unit that is going to give you a great three band EQ (kenwood system E's+) and lots of other functions. Good luck!

Im liking the unsurpassed sound quality of the eclipses, even if they dont have as many features as the sony's.
