Q:
Hey guys,
I just ran into the PO of my 73 240z, and we were talking about the car for a while (he was driving a REALLY nice anniversary edition turbo supra) and he was telling me a little more about the 5-speed that was in my 240. Apparently, he says that this 5-speed came from japan, and that it was correct for this year. Does anyone know a little more about this transmission? I havent taken the tranny out of the car yet, so i cant give you any numbers, but if there are any pictures i can take that would help, i could do that. I'm curious about the gear ratios for this, cuz i think 5th would just be a gear added on top, but who knows. You guys are probably eating your turkey dinners right now, so i'll be patient, but this is really kool and i want to know all i can about this.

I have heard talk of domestic market only 5 speeds for the 240 before...I imagine not many exist anymore...is the throw to reverse right below 5th like the other 5 speeds?

Nobody Searched, did they?
Available from DAY ONE outside the USA.
Chances are it's a run of the mill "B" boxes.
If you have a .85 overdrive, you should be running 3.7 or 3.9 reargear as that was the designed ratios outside the USA.
If you have the later ZX box, then 4.11 or 4.37 is more like it....using a 3.36 with the late ZX gearbox lugs the hell out of the engine, with 50mph bing at like 2000rpms, far below the powerband of an N/A engine, you have to downshift to third to even THINK of acceleration with a near stock Z with that setup.
