Finally got my car back!

General Chat

Q:

Well went down to the tranny shop to bash some heads in (not really) and it turns out that they replaced the bearing and shaft in the turbo. Only got to drive it a few blocks, but not enough to boost it really. Not getting that noise. I am hearing a slight tink in first but it doesn't sound the same as before, and just may be car noises and paranoia. Only time will tell. As for now, I'm just happy I don't have to take them to court over it.
Mom is bugging me to sell the car while its running as she predicts that the car will never run good for long. I just can't do it though. I'm in too deep. I'm going to baby this thing and try to find a beater in the meantime. Hopefully it runs with no problems t'ill I can afford one. Just gotta get the soft brake problem handled and the left headlight fixed, and I should be good. I will be nervous driving on the freeway for a while though.
Its good to see my car again though. Another reason to give thanks tommorow!

Good to hear....wondered what happened.
If you need a beater, then get one. But dont sell your baby.
Its a sweet looking Z,
I swap between a Honda 750 Cycle, toyota truck, and my 82 turbo.
theres a place for all of them.

It looks like you built the motor mostly right. The rest of the drivetrain will be under some serious stress when you're on it hard. If you have a BW tranny you can expect it to break. They break in mustangs all the time. If you have a nissan tranny, they are tough but can only hold out for so long.
It's past time for use to have a new and stronger tranny available on the market for our cars. Nissan makes a tranny that can hold the power we can make with the L series motors, just that it does not fit our engines.
I notice that a bunch of you younger guys with Z's have to sell them the first few times you have to do anything to maintain the cars. It kinda makes me wish i had loads of cash, lots of land with an airplane hanger on it and that I knew all of your parents. I would have a collection of Zs like no other...
They are old cars and will require you to have work done to them. Most Z's have had a hard life cause of their racing history, people tend to run them hard on the street and some race them on the weekeneds.
Good luck and I hope you get to keep your car. BTW if you learn how to do the work yourself and you're good at it, it will save you a ton of cash..

Yeah, I'm definitely not selling it. I just gotta resist the urge to put more money into upgrades until I get a beater as I can't afford the downtime when its my only car. Mom says this is the last time I can use their car if mine breaks again...Parents Geez!
Yeah the tranny thing really ticks me off. In the end it is a better idea imo to go rb25 if you're shooting for 400hp as any manual tranny option for the L is going to cost close to 3k anyway. The rb tranny is bulletproof though. I really hope this z32 tranny mod works out soon.

im still on my first z! I havent even had the thought of selling her. Ive only had her for about four years now, but i wouldnt think of selling her. I drive the z real hard too. I guess i have just been fortunate that i have the tools and the knowledge to fix the car myself, well most of the time anyway. I do need another car to drive on the side. Im thinkin either the G35 or maybe even the TL/TSX.

When you have a (very cheap beater) with the basic ins, no theft, among
other things, You can do what you want to the Z.
But it is nice to Blast Off in the Z tho. There just so fun to drive, To me its like really driving, and not just turning the wheel and pushing petals.
It remind me of driving my 750 Honda, but the honda pulls up to 10,000
rpms. Wouldnt that be nice in a Z :)

I'll def. be at the christmas get together. If only to be able to drive to work and back without the fumes is a good enough reason for me to get a beater. I'm going to try the police auction. This will give me more motivation to work on my car since I won't be so scared of being out of one.

Well for what it's worth. I have my Z32 tranny here in the garage and I'm 100% sure I can make the adapter needed to bolt it to the L series engines. I have the connections for good hardware and stuff so, this should go through. I would wait for that other guy to make em but damn, I need it like yesterday. My tranny is making some noises and I hate to put another N/A tranny in it just to end up doing the same in time.
I'm not sure if I will be selling any of the adapters. At this point I'm making mine and maybe a few for close friends. The metal has been ordered and should be here sometime next week.
A few really cool things about this swap is the fact that the tranny can take a lot more torque and HP. Also it does not look all that hard to swap in. Adapter plate, tranny mount and driveshaft.

Had a neighbor who put a I believe 327 into a rambler metropolitian.
I learned anything can be done, and that thing moved. Total redone body and interior, flared fenders, wheels and red letter tires.

How many Mom's have been bashed (the reverse guilt trip layed on them) for throughing out those old comic books and basball cards when the collector prices are in hundreds and thousands?
Do a little research and come up with some figures on collector cars and what they're worth today.
Like creative accounting, show her that you're on the ground floor of a future collecting craze and how smart you are to get this valuable bargain that appreciates with time rather than loses value and at the same time is a stylish and practical car.
Make her proud of how she taught you initiative and responsibility in seeing the potential worth of a collectable piece of pratical art and that you can save money and enhance the value of this future down payment on a house or retirement fund by learning how to restore it on your own.

Pallnet, its good to hear you're confident on the z32 tranny. If you decide not to sell the adapter, I hope you share the information, and can get a shop to do it for me. In the meantime, I'm driving like a granny with this nissan tranny.
