Eclipse Research - what's good?

General Chat

Q:

A friend is considering the Mitsubishi Eclipse coupes of the 90s for an everyday sporty coupe. As a Nissan and Saab follower, I have just a general knowledge of the cars, but am ignorant of model and style changes, V6 versus 4 versus Turbo, and which years are the best values, least problems. Anyone have intimate experince here, recommendations, and possible websites as good as our zcar.com?
Thanks all. And Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone !!

I have been driving a 91 1st gen eclipse and I really dont like it here are the most common problems with 1st and 2nd gen talon/eclipse.
-lifter tap
-low oil pressure at idle
-Like to leak oil
-valve covers are known to crack
Also the 2nd gen's had a problem with crank walk which can cause bearing failure, I think high pressure clutches make it even worse.
The oil pressure on these cars is usually 10psi at idle which I guess is normal after reading the forums. The worst part is changing the timing belt. Ive also heard that the lifter tap can cause performance problems if the knock sensor picks it up. Dont get me wrong these cars can run 11's rather easy but they do break alot here is a good forum

Lifter tap can be solved by installing 3000GT/Stealth revised lifters, also the 3G Eclipse has them. But 300ZXs do the same thing, they have hydraulic lifters and mine tick now and then too.
Low oil pressure at idle? It has just as much oil pressure as any other car I've ever owned.
They like to leak oil if you wear your motor out and the gaskets start going south.
It's not the valve covers that are prone to cracking, it's the exhaust manifolds on the 1g turbos.
The crank starts to rock back and forth in the bearings, causing it to eventually fail. They say a way to test is take a hard left turn and in the turn, push the clutch in and let go...somethign about if it doesn't come back up, or comes up really slow, the crank is walking, something like that.
If you have a low mileage motor that some dumbass kid hasn't raced the piss out of, and you install the new lifters, you're in for a loooong lifetime of a fun fun car!
