Eclipse - Any Good? Years?

General Chat

Q:

Looking at Eclipse in the middle and late 90s for a friend. Anyone got any real experience or insights with these? Best years, which engines, problem areas, styling changes? What about websites and forums?
Thanks a Bunch!

Do not get a 99....They are a bitch to work on period, But the 99 model is the is a crossover year to the next gen. Other than that, Theres a good Mitshlksjdfkaj forum, its usually the first on the search.
Other than that, check all the regular stuff. Check the clear coat on the paint carefully. I spent many hours under my friend's 99. I like the cars but the performance wasnt there for me.

My son has a 90 Talon AWD, and a 91 Galant VR-4. They are both among the "good" years. Tell your friend to buy 6 bolt 4G63 engined ones, your choice on AWD or front. In mid 93 they started using the newer 7 bolt motors which are notorious for crank walk. The 6 0r 7 bolt label has to do with the number of bolts that hold the flywheel to the crank. The Mitsu 4G63 is an awesome motor, with all the potential of a SR20, in fact my son and I have considered a 4G63 powered Z. We are putting down 450 HP form his VR-4 and have a new engine on the stand that should build 600+.
So anyway to answer your question 90-92 are all good, and some 93's.
Sorry I rambled.

95 and 96 are the first 2 years of the 2g, but they changed the body to look better in 97-99. Personally I think they both look just as good in their own way, but most people prefer the 97-99. The RS and GS aren't that great, because they had the Chrysler 420A engine. The RS has no ground effects and crappy wheels, while the GS has a factory body kit (side skirts). The GST is the front wheel drive turbo and much easier to find in the 2g body than the GSX which is the AWD turbo. DSMTuner.com, DSMTalk.com, and ClubDSM.com are the 3 DSM sites I go to. Like the guy earlier said, 7 bolts are prone to crankwalk easier, but it's not hard at all to find someone who's done a 6 bolt swap. The classifieds on DSMTuner.com is chock full of them. All in all they're good cars with the Mitsu powered ones having an invincible block that's very cheap to tune and you can make unholy amounts of horsepower on stock engine internals. Even the stock turbo can push it into the 13s. They should also be dirt cheap to purchase, relatively speaking, because mostly dumbass kids own them and when they modify them, they probably won't get much in trade in value, so they decide to sell it on their own, and you can get some pretty good deals.
I got one that has Tenzo 17s on it, Viscous LSD with ABS brakes (not a possible option in the 1g), and a Buschur Racing Stage 3 race block with 8.5:1 compression and a knife edged crank. This motor cost $3500 and is capable of over 700hp at the crank. A Walbro 255 fuel pump, Turbo XS Dual Stage Boost Controller, Autometer A/F guage, and a custom exhaust. I think that's all...I paid like $2850 for it or something like that.

Go with a Galant VR-4 Total sleeper. AWD AWS turbo...I know they made some with the 3.0 but maybe not in the states????

The 3.0? That'd be awesome to have a 6g72 twin turbo in a lil Galant :)
My mom had a non turbo 3000GT and even though it was heavy, that car had so much power and revved so fast. You could redline it in any gear and it was just as smooth as glass. You could gun it and just get up and go, even at highway cruising speeds.

Thanks for all your good input guys. I have watched these cars on the street, have read the road tests through the years, but don't know them well enough to distinguish specific years, models and engines. Of course, I know the 3000GT and VR-4s pretty well, as they were sold as direct competitors to the Z32. I would guess that the 3000Gts and Vr4s have all the same high cost repair burdens our Z32s have.
I will watch all the ads online and get familiar with them, the 6-bolt conversions, and their features and prices. Thanks for the forum address also.

I love the 1G eclipse/talons, lasers are ugly as sin. The 2g's just look like a girls car to me, but they are cool too. Roadraceengineering is the authority on DSM's in socal.
