Q:
i don't know if this applies to the entire country.. but in NC as of January they are changing the inspections so that all pre 96 cars require no emissions inspection... which is a relief because my car failed emissions by a long shot.... im just gonna wait it out.

wow, nice... i wish they did that in VA, then i wouldnt have to worry about my exhaust pipe leaking, lol
A:
you all would love it down here in florida there are no emissions checks and the cops don't really seem to car about loudness of exhaust or anything like that
A:
yah, i heard about that... lucky
A:
My car ('73) did not require the emissions test previously, only a visual inspection -- is this gone also and what about the saftey inspection?
'73 240Z w/all the smog stuff - thanks North Carolina!

I don't know if any of you saw the post on aftermarket seat brackets from a guy Down Under, but it seems they must have an "engineer's" certificate to make their car legal if they install anything other than OEM equipment related to safety. Seats are one of those listed.
And we all thought the USA was regulation happy......

I guarantee that one. They sniff all cars, even OBDII cars ('96-current). Utah is hit and miss depending on which county you live in.

In WA the rule used to be when your car hit 30 years old, you didn't need to run emissions, but I think their trying to amend it so that any car produced after 1980 or so has to meet the emissions requirements for its production year. The law is sweet because I can do any swap I want and I never have to have my car inspected, better yet I can buy collectors plates for any car over 30 years old and never have to buy tabs again! I took advantage of that as soon as my '73 hit its birthday in 2003.
'73 Turbo, not much stock. Sold now... :-(

I wish they'd get rid of that crap in Hamilton County in Chattanooga, TN. Anything 75 and up has to be tested. That's bullshit I think. People around here that drive old cars do so because they can't afford anything else.

"which is a relief because my car failed emissions by a long shot.... im just gonna wait it out."
WTF? What kind of people do we have here who can't even field a car that runs clean?
Making a 71 240 Z clean out the pipe to 83 CATALYZED standards is NOT A PROBLEM!
If you can't fix your car to run clean, you shouldn't be driving it!
Sheez!

Why shouldn't they be made to run CLEANLY? There is no "financial burden" to keep a car in a modicum of tune. Any idiot can make a car run cleanly.
You guys better wake up, and realize if you don't support running CLEAN cars, the politicians will do what they ALWAYS DO: Generalize, and Lump people together in classes and simply BAN anything after a certian year except for parades!
It is the way it is in many parts of the world now: in Jakarta for instance (not the paragon of emissions control BTW!) they simply BANNED all vehicles within the city limits unless they were newer than 10 years old. That way people could keep them, just not in the polluted city where they had the problem!
Keep a car in tune, or don't drive it. It's not that hard.
