I am the R&D Manager for a poultry processing company. I design processed chicken products for the Quick Service and Casual Dining arena. Culinary teams develop concepts and my team commercializes those recipes into mass produced items.
Been doing this for over 20 years and I really do enjoy the fast paced, demanding challenges. I do not enjoy the BS & Politics that seem to overwhelm every industry today, but you have to learn to take the good with the bad.
I actually went to college intending on going into Veterinary Medicine. Couldn't quite cut the Organic Chemistry and Physics, so I settled for a degree in Agriculture and pursued a career in the food industry.

Yes, there can sometimes be a great deal of political BS to deal with, but this becomes a problem mostly only in big city departments. In smaller departments, limited jurisdiction departments (campus or airport) and most rural sherriffs departments you wont run into that problem.
And dont dare think you'll just be sitting in a car driving around eating doughnuts all day. You need to stay physically fit; not just to pass whatever physical examination is required to get into police basic, but to be able to run when you need to. No matter where you work, at some point in time you're probably gonna have to chase somebody and/or tackle somebody, and you'll probably get the crap beat out of you at some point in time.
Also, you don't need a college degree to get into most police departments; however, it will help you get promotions to Sgt. or Lt. or Detective if thats the kind of thing your looking for. Whatever education you get will be worthless except for a degree; criminal jusice majors mostly deal with crime and policing theory, and not with the nitty gritty of the actual job.

I have been in the automotive industry since I was in college (1992), most of the time in the suspension componets area. I spent a few years working as a design engineer, and I really loved that job. Time passed and my responsabilities became less technical and more administrative, so my days as a design engineer are over. But hey, salary and benefits are much better now.
I also have the tendency of turning my hobbies into business (not full time, since I already have a full time job). I was involved in cell phone tech a few years ago, and ended up selling and servicing cell phones. That hobbie ended and so did the business. Then, I became interested in satellite communications, and a few months later, I was selling and installing satellite equipment. That hobbie ended too. Then I became interested in Z cars, I'm not really sure if I can make money out of it, unless I open a shop.

Secuirty Representative - started with TEXACO in 1979 now have almost 20 years at The Methodist Hospital in Houston.
If you are mature enough - go for the Police. A couple of years of college is a good idea, most large departments require it.
You will learn more about people and use more applied psycology in the field than most psycologists - but it depends on the department, size and some other factors.
Politics and BS is everywhere in any field but a lot depends on how you react to it. As a rooky you will have a lot to learn. On the street you will learn what they don't teach in books.
After two years it will all be repition and if you don't like it get out, but the experience will be like no other education you could ever get.
Again it all depends on how you react to the situations and the people you work with and deal with. Undeerstanding and dealing with people is probabally the hardest education you will ever get.
Use what you learn wisely but remember, Police Officers have the highest divorce and suicide rate of any profession.
Also remember - Police are the only people society gives the power of life and death over it's citizens. You will be expected to make that life or death decision in a split second. The courts will have months to decide if you're right.
But all so know that the vast majority of police never have to fire their gun at someone.
Don't go by movies and television, that is fiction and drama and is overplayed to excite. The exception is the old TV show Barney Miller - cops all over the country said that was the truest depiction of their day to day job.
Get to know some cops, get to understand that the job is overworked and underpaid and all around you, many will not appreciate what you do -
until you save someones life, until you help those who can't help themselves, until you know; that if you can hack it, like doctors and nurses - you're the closet thing to an angel that we poor mortals can have because you can do a superhuman job that most can't.

"I also spent 4 years in the USAF and would now be only 8 months from retirement had I stayed in ........AAAAAARRRRRRGHHHHHHHHH!!!!.............20 years seemed like such a long time back then......"
uh, no Norm, you are mistaken!
Recently my wife got all over me about my "extended deployment" with the current company. I reminded her that HAD I stayed in the USAF, that I would currently be on STOP-LOSS, and more than likely deployed for a YEAR AT A STRETCH. And that I would not be allowed to retire UNTIL CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES!
You forgot that section in your contract, huh? Certain fields will always be short, Avionics, Support, etc... StopLoss has hit my Bro-in-Law several times.
Same now, you might be READY to start a new career if you were in the USAF, but the question is, would Unka Sugar LET you???
My wife recinded here complaints when she realized I (again) was right! LOL
