CV axles for $35??!?

General Chat

Q:

well I'm always on the lookout for good CV axles for my turbo swap (l28et into non-turbo 80 zx), so when I saw this on EBay for $34.76, I was initially excited:
But I found a few problems, so I wrote the guy a message with these questions:
1) It says 280z, from 82-83, is it for a 280z 2+2, or a 280zx?
2) It says "both", which I assume means left and right, but yet the left and right CV axles are different!!?!
3) The picture doesn't resemble a 280zx cv axle at all (not a big deal as I know many use generic pictures)
The guy wrote me back with this message:
> Item: CV AXLE NISSAN 280Z 2+2 BOTH 1982-1983 #4510 (8010076961)
> hope29554 is the seller.
>
> the price would be $160.97 with a core deposit of $75.00.we would
> need to know however if it has 16mm or 14mm tie rod threads.
WHAT?? Is this guy a total idiot? Who puts up an auction for a part with a completely incorrect price and application? (well other than AutoZone, etc.)
So if I were you guys I'd be careful dealing with this guy.

looks like 20 available, priced each.
not that hard to decode...

that is most likely a generic picture as all the other ones he has up for auction have the same picture. and BTW the one pictured is for a front wheel drive vehicle
A:

Yea it's a generic pic...I purchased an axle from him for my 91 Eclipse AWD...fast shipment, good packaging, and it looks to be a high quality rebuild. Plus it's cheaper than most shops charge (auto zone, etc) and there's no core charge. Go for it.

Go for it? What size tie rods thread into the rear axle on YOUR Z?

I got one axle with the 16mm threads and another with the 14mm tie rod threads on the same car! So since I couldn't thread the tie rods on I just welded them. So far I have 4 on the 16mm side and 5 on the 14mm side to balance it out. Be careful though if you don't get them spaced right they will bind on your sway bar, which may also have threading for additional tie rod ends - you can never have enough ya know.

20 * $35 = $700 ??? What is the conclusion you are coming to? That the $160 plus $75 core charge is for all 20 cv axles?!?
just for the record he did email me back, apologized for the lack of info, and said:
" the axles listed are for that apllication and do not fit your car"
now as far as no core charge, the seller himself told me that there is a $75 core charge (though the auction doesn't say it), so I assume that core charge is only for these specific axles (not the ones you got for your Eclipse).

That I can come up with, is that he (and others) apparently know nothing about them.
#1 - Generic pic........anybody can see that....
#2 - According to my info, (somebody correct me......) THE SAME CV shaft
fits BOTH the right and left of any 280Z or ZX from 1975 to 1986
#3 - The shaft # is different for the TURBO 1981 to 1983 but BOTH
the left and the right are the same............
#4 - Tie rods....??? Not a clue as to why anybody would even discuss them ! ! ! ! ! !
The bottom line is that "buy it now" price of $35 is probably a 'come-on', and as he states in the ad, "if ....not satisfactory.....etc." he will replace it with the "correct one".........from that, I gather, you won't be getting ANY money back, and the "Correct" shaft will probably cost you more $$ and a core charge to be slipped in later............
If it's the *Correct CV* for $35..........BUY IT ! ! ! ! !

The quoted references you made are taken out of context.....
BOTH are talking about "Mixing and matching" diffy's and shafts from different years, and also from LSD's...........and one question was concerning a '73, I believe, which was out of the years specified.
The catalog reference I based it on showed the same part # for those
years I quoted................
Don't speculate, .................I believe my quote was "somebody correct me....."
But you havta have specific info................

I've got the ZXT CV axles under my Z and I know that one side is about 1/2" longer than the other side (I believe the passenger side is the longer one). They will fit any R200 single track differential (other than the VLSD?), and like any other R200, the input shafts going into the diff are different from left to right as well.
