transmission rebuild

General Chat

Q:

Hi there...I Have done a search, but just wanted some opinions...I need to rebuild my 5-speed transmission in my 1972 240 Z (stock engine). I have heard different opinions regarding stock vs. aluminum/lightweight flywheels and also gear-ratios. When I rebuild my motor I probably won't go too crazy, will likely rebuild the 240 or put in a rebello or turbo, don't know, but I want a daily driver that is fast but reliable. Any advice on the flywheel/gear ratio or maybe an entirely different trans? Please forgive my ignorance, I am reading as much as I can. My husband used to race vipers and tells me to just go to the track and ask the "fast guys"! Thanks in advance, Kim

What 5-speed do you have in there now? What rear end? Need to know that info before giving any worthwhile answers to gear ratio Qs. A popular recommendation here is to run an '82-'83 5-speed from an NA 280ZX through a 3:90 rear (also out of NA 5-speed ZX) for nice, quick off the line accel. Can't recommend flywheel because no experience there, and because I think it's a waste of $$ to run anything but a stock flywheel/clutch in a daily driver.
