So I found a guy who is selling an 83 turbo ZX that runs and drives for $400. The bad news, he doesn't have the title for it. Supposedly, he did some work for a guy and received the car as payment. He doesn't remember the guys name of course. Just a little too risky for me. He wants to part it out because of the title problem. So now I'm considering buying the exhaust manifold and turbo off of him to put on an N42 block with dished pistons and a P90 head that I have sitting around and drop it in my '76 with Megasquirt. It's frustrating getting all excited for nothing.

So why not offer him like 250 - 300 for the complete motor, tranny, computer and FI harness. Use what you need, keep what you can store as spare parts (block, head, tranny...). Plus your going to want the oil pan. Then feed us the left overs (computer, FI harness, exh man, intake, 240mm flywheel {if you don't use it})... You coud make back some of your money while your at it.
Then he could part out the rest and he would make more then 400 over all for his car. He could sell what is in good shape on ebay.... Gauges, dash, glove box. wiring, power what ever, seats, console, switches, panels, tail lights, turn singnals, side markers, R200, CV's and other goodies. When done cut up what is left and take to a scrap yard.
Win, win for both of you...

I say buy it and part it out yourself. No need to title it then.

Price drops without the title. After all, you have to pull the motor so it's worth less than if it was ready to load. Check in to getting a title (before you pay him).
Anyone can drive a new car.

If the guy is telling the truth, then he can come up with the title with ONE trip to DMV.
It's possible for you to get hooked-up for receiving stolen property should the PO get cranky.
Faster than a Motorola

Have him get a mechanics lein on it.
You can get the vin number and have DMV check it.
If he can't get a mechanic's lein a reputable mechanic in the area could help you.
Check with DMV on all of the above, maybe there's another option for you. Why tear apart a working Z if you don't have too.

So you can just steal a car then, take it all apart and sell it off on ebay.
What a great Idea :)
I see now why ebay is doing so good, Fencing stolen goods, apparently
pays big bucks. And all legal, perfect.....
