Senkyoshi,
I have never understood Nissan's decision to NOT go with a retro look from the 240Z. I don't know this to be a fact, but I think the first series was the highest selling series of all the Zs. I've always thought that if Chevrolet re-released the 67 Corvette, they couldn't keep one of them in a showroom based on demand. No different for Nissan.
As far as the 2009 350Z goes, I'm sure a lot of engineering and thought went into that design but I think that a modern fusion of the old 240Z is the way to go. I'd like to see the folks who did the PT Cruiser and the Mustang take a shot at the 2009 Z.

Thanks.
I sure wish it would head more into the (gasp) Ford styling of sports cars instead of that 1930's art deco look.

Hey Hybrid7777Z,
Check this out and see what a good "fusion" looks like. Someone at Ford had their thinking caps on when they went the route of the car in your picture. Take a peek where that probably came from.

That looks like the modern day version of a 65 coupe. I think it is well done. I'd buy that car in a second.

More creature comforts, more practicality, better daily driver status, in otherwords, A CHICK CAR!!!! No thanks, I'll stick with my 240Z. It's what it was meant to be, light, agile, and fun. No need for AC, no need for PS, no need for a stereo, just fun curve carving. It's not as powerful as a muscle car, but a lot more fun to drive. Having a car that was only good for straight 1/4 runs was fun for about 10 minutes. Having a car that will zip thru turns and wind up high is always fun.

I have little faith in the rumor mill, but if Edmunds is correct, Nissan is going right down the same Z to ZX path that they did after the S30. Everything mentioned was directing the Z away from being a Z. Like I said though, I'll believe it when I see it.

it looks like they did a variation of the sugar scoops, that's a good thing. Very subtle but still there.

People are fatter, lazier and more stupid. Products design and demand for products reflect this.
Watch a movie from the 20's to the 70's and note how thin everyone looks. Then drive by your nearest school or mall an look at the "shape of things to come".

What do you mean by highest selling? Nissan sold more 280ZXs than 240Zs. (Production numbers) While it is true that Nissan sold more S30 cars than S130 cars, that was over 9 years of production versus 5 years of production.
As much as many of us love the S30 design, we have to face facts. It's not as iconic as the first generation Mustang (love it or hate it). Nissan's plan to sell restored 240Zs did not fare very well, either. I wouldn't be surprised if that factored in to design considerations.
In a way, would it really be like a 240Z if it just resembled one on the outside but it was as plush as the 350Z is?

Maybe it is the art style, but the back of the car looks like some kind of hatchback like a Honda CRX.... it isn't bad, but it isnt mindblowing, either. The body change style rather reminds me of the z31 84-86 and 87-89 styles---the latter being more rounded (and heavier, of course). The front end looks kinda nice--it doesnt remind me of a fish like the current one...
I wonder how long before they introduce a 2+2 for its lineup...

Looks more like the new eclpise.
Still I dont put much credibility into a article from a big time car place that calls the 2008 GT-R a Skyline. The next gen Skyline is already out.

"People are fatter, lazier and more stupid."
Lazy and stupid are constants in the auto industry, just look at some of the designs of the 50's. Markeing people looks for what trend, what trim, what colors, what hood lines are popular and have always tended to sell to it. Just like cars used to have vertical fins, most cars now sell with useless horizonatl fins.
As far as "fatter", the cars of the 40's and 50's are also more comfortable for fatties...
REAL cars, real icons (like a 240z, a 60's Mustang, a VW) are DIFFERENT from the marketing mold and stand out. McCars like the Dodge neon, Nissan Sentra, Toyota Camry, etc are completely "non-icons" of blandness and "market segment mentality".

They need to start with a blank canvas in my opinion instead of trying to tweak the 350Z's original design. Infact bring it back to a 300Z with a turbocharged engine, being NA just aint right! lol

Im glad you arent on the Nissan design staff. Retro is a terrible idea, those hacks at ford and GM cant design a car for their lives so they just rip off what sold in the past. its good to be different and original thats the only way to make progress. We'd all be driving retro model T's if everybody just copied everything.

i would love to see a retro 240z, but the 350z isn't it thank god.

I did notice the crx looking back hatch... Overall, I like it more than the current 350z... Why? Because I don't like the it the first place! Just my own personal opinion.
Personally I live SOME retroness in the new designs that Ford, GM, and Dodge are starting to turn out... I like the new Mustang, retro and modern styling blended well. I like GM's "09 Camaro" concept, it's retro, but still modern looking as well... I HATE Dodge's Challenger due to come out in 08. It looks almost exactly what the old one did, but "smoother" I guess you'd say... It's TOO retro in my opinion.

Clearly this will be an evolutionary design that softens some of the harder edges of the current model.
Thank GOD, those edges are ridiculously sharp!
It's absolutely frivilous to debate the design of the present or future 350Z. What's done is done, and cannot be undone (unfortunately). This topic comes up once or twice a week, and it seems like the same people give the same opinions, leading to the SAME debate every damn time.
Give it a rest.

didnt mean it that way AT ALL...i simply meant that if anyone had a right to comment on news or styling about the upcoming Z...it would surely be the current owners who look at the car everyday and know its quirks. im in no way implying the Z33 is better, id love to have a 240 or 260 like justin, just cant afford or have space for 2 cars.

This is what my friend said to me in an email the other day. He works for Nissan HQ in Japan and now relocated to TN. We were talking about Datsun concept and why they don't revert back to that and he said:
"The “datsun” concept was being pushed by Mr. K for the past several years. However, it has been struck down. Do not keep your hopes up for a relatively low displacement, low price, sports car.
The problem with Nissan right now is that we are trying to cut down on parts complexity. A big component of it is the drivetrain. We are trying to focus on four different engine types at the moment (MR, QR, VQ, VH). This, compounded with the fact that we have been stuffing Maximas & Altimas with high displacement engines really narrows the possibility of having low displacement options for a sports car."

Joe
