fix for pulksating fuel pressure

General Chat

Q:

I have been looking for a good fuel damper for quite some time with no real luck. I have always had a shaky needle to some degree, even stock it jittered.
After I replaced just about every fuel component, larger injectors, fuel pump, fuel rail and all that neat stuff to run high hp I still had somewhat of a jitter in the fuel pressure. I would not call it a big problem, until I went to 720cc injectors then the problem got worse. The 420cc injectors were ok and no negative affects happened, except maybe fuel economy, but for the most part manageable.
So I tried again on a search and typed in preformance fuel damper and boom up came a site that had a damper. I called and quized Tim there about the damper and he told me it was designed to fix 1600cc injectors and the pulsation problems associated with the large injectors.
I bought the part and for once I installed it with NO, GET THIS, NOOOOOOOOOO modifications to my rail, fuel lines, except a 90 AN fitting and the thing worked, it worked EXCELLENT! NO jitter in the needle at all anymore. You can see the aprt on my site at

The part is very nice and it works, check it out. I would recommend it to anyone running large injectors. The aprt was about 110.00 plus the shipping, and you can buy a tee from them as well to install the part and connect the return line to. EXCELLENT PART!

Or you could have screw a Holley air bleed into the back of the guage for about $2.50.

I think his problem was more of a concern of lack of fuel pressure that could cause problems under heavy load, rather than just a shaky needle...better to spend $100 to fix the problem than $2.50 to hide it! lol

Jeff - if you go back and edit the post, it should let you change the Subject line too. removing the "k" would be helpful for future searchers trying to find info on the subject.
Also, no love for the source of the part ?!?- I didn't see any reference to their website or a company name or anything...

Hey jeff:
How bad did the stock pump jitter? I got my L28et back together that I have been posting about and noticed a large fluxuation that is obviously not suppose to be there. There is a very good chance it is probably the reason why the ring lands failed on my motor. I have a stock fuel pump and the pressure is set at 40psi 1Krpm idle and 50psi at max load. I understand that what my fuel system is now doing is wrong and is indicitive of something failing, because the needle has been jumping around 5psi! I think the fuel pump may be on it's way out and am considering ending my problems with a Holley replacement pump and an aftermarket FPR. Currently I have a device on the return line that acts like a restrictor to gain the fuel pressure. Basically a modified fuel damper just after the rail. The stock damper is still in place in the rear of the car as well. Kinda scary to watch the fuel pressure jump around like that.

First off if you are going to do your first upgrade correctly, you are going to have to get a new fuel pump. The Bosch fuel pump for the 944 turbo car will work very well. You will have all the flow you could ask fore,,,,,, PROVIDED,,,,,, you are running 3 BAR static fuel pressure. THE PUMP WILL fall on its face if you run 4 BAR static fuel pressure. I am guessing you are running 20-22 psi of boost.
If you are running that kind of pressure then you are in for a good ride if it is a ZX, and I have never considered it for the older z cars. The ONLY single,,,, stock, fuel pump that will work is the Nissan TWIN Turbo 300ZX cars. That pump will work! You will have to get it installed in the fuel tank, downside of the install, but you can take a look at my page and get some good ideas from it and get a good idea of what is involved.
The fuel damper works very well, and I would recommend it to ANYONE, for the cost it is an exceptional part that is very effective in it's intended use. Here is the link to the site:

Have fun, check it out, then if you want to be very percise, then I can give you a few ideas for test points within the system, to determine the flow capabilities of the fuel supply line, and the fuel return line. That is a fun test.
Yes, the fuel rail does get much hotter then I would like it to get. Bottom line is that it is very difficult to shield the heat from the rail and the injectors due to the configuration of the cylinder head. There is just alot of heat there because of the exhaust manifold, and then the turbo as well. I can tell you that exhaust turbine housing gets hot enough to melt your skin in a very short time LOL. Zelda branded me LOL, little bit@h LOL.
anyway, later

trippintl0 -If you had even the vaguest clue how fuel systems work-you wouldn't have said that.
So please stick to something you're familiar with.

When plumbing a house, an extra 6" to 12" of capped pipe on long lines is used to create a trapped air cushion that dampens the "water hammer" effect.
I wonder if this could be applied to a fuel system for cheap.
