It does remind you of the VW squarebacks...

A:

Looks to me to be a 1965 VW Squareback. 6 volt system, air cooled 4 cyl. engine, Those carbs are not the orignial ones. I think this was the first year for the Squareback. VW made a Fastback and a Knochback that used the same chassie and drivetrain. You opened the rear hatch and removed a cover to work on the engine. I worked one many of these in the mid 70's and I think my back still hurts from leaning over to work on that engine!!!
Best of luck....
Had a 77 280Z and two 70 510 Wagons once upon a time...

Very close! Youve got the right make and decade.. keep guessing.

There is a faded red one of those in town... I aught to stop and ask about it or is that cheating??
Mr. ""King of the Banned" for a week or so" won't be able to answer... I'm sure he knows as well.
I saw another VW that is either same model or a variation of this model. The rear fenders unbolt near the top of the crease. Those pics above appear to be solid.
I would also think that Carman built the body for this VW. Just because of it's similarness to the Giha(sp?)

I didn’t see Darrel's sneaky little edit up at the top.. He got the significance.
The D-Jetronic system developed by Bosch in the early 1960's was the first mass-production electronic fuel injection system. It was primarily based on patents that Bosch licensed from the Bendix corporation. Bendix developed the basic idea of using an inductive element coupled to manifold vacuum as a component in a loop circuit ("multivibrator") to develop the basic injection pulse width. The system was first used on the 1968 VW Type 3 and Type 4 motors making the 1968 Volkswagen Type 3/Type 4 the first mass production vehicles to include electronic fuel injection.
Notables: The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL was the first gas direct injection (non electronic) production car and several diesel injected cars preceded that.
