Q:
I have about a 3k budget (give or take a couple hundred), I live in MI, and I need some suggestions. What kind of decent driver can I get with that kind of money? I'm going to be covering about 200 miles per week on average, what with seeing the girlfriend and stuff. :-P
Any ideas?

maybe a mid 90's subaru? i really don't know much about blue book numbers, but i know ya can't go wrong with a subie ;)
also if you wanna have some spending money left over, go for a early 80's Toyota Tercel 4x4 wagon. those things will never give up, and if you get the manual 6 speed transmission, they are pretty much unstoppable in the snow.

I agree with the above. The subie is great and the tercel 4x4 would also be a good option.

the subie will be hard to find.
$3000.00 can buy you a pretty good used car despite what people think.
I just picked up a 99 malibu ls with 88k almost perfect body (only a slight amount of touch ups for my body guy to do) and what not for 3700.
For 3k or less I was seeing tons of 97 or older with 90-150k miles
New where there was a 96 saturn sedan 160k for 1800 that just needed brakes and some rust repair on the door sills.
if your looking for something japanese you will end up having to look early 90's, high miles of course, and if you want a decent body well.....
I prolly coulda done better if I had waited, but it's not a bad car for what I needed it to be and fairly reliable compared to most other american cars. It's not a nissan like I preffer but I wanted something newer, with a decent body, and not 200k on the clock.

This is probably not what you're looking for but a friend of mine got a heck of a deal on a car that has had the conversion.

Crown Vic/TC/Gr.Marq (w/chains - just in case) and ~ 100 lbs of kitty litter and a shovel and good snow tires. If the snow/ice is too bad for this boat, then stay home. Decent mileage ~ 20-22 mpg too. Subies are OK, but not much room and the gas mileage is not that great IMO - only abt 24-26 mpg from my experience. If the snow is too deep, neither car has the ground clearance of an SUV, but the Outbacks sit a little higher. Plus, parts and service on the Fords are cheaper.
Plenty of SUV-s on the market, but mileage sux for a long commute like U mentioned.
Rusty but running.

And, now we are historic.

Get a toyota truck it will last foreever, my dads work had one with over 400,000 miles on it sure there isnt much of a body but who cares and that thing had no big repairs in it just normal wear and tear

mid 90s subaru imprezas a great... my mom gets 29 mpg on her AWD 97 impreza, and 32 mpg on her 93 front wheel drive impreza. The AWD goes anywher in the snow.

I live in michigan --
I have a decent winter car --
and a sweet Z --
however my commute is about to go up to 500+ miles a week
Thus I have my Z on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Bob-Sharp-Racing-GT-33-HIGH-PERFORMANCE-RARE-SURVIVOR_W0QQitemZ250035161602QQihZ015QQcategoryZ6187QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
The point is ---
assuming my Z sells and I have the money to buy a newer car---
I will hook you up with a deal on my winter car
1995 SHO
130k (I think maybe more)
35K on transmission
less than 10k on brakes (replaced rotors, calipers, and pads)
last summer my wife was driving this car for a couple months --- so I took it to the mechanic and dropped $1500 fixing things
relatively RUST FREE --- has seen 3 winters -- but is washed weekly
currently needs struts and tie rods (my mechanic gave me a $300 qoute -- he promises that the price will not go up and he will give the price to anyone that buys the car)
uses some oil -- but its a ford
handles great in the snow
since 04
replaced radiator, trans, tires, brakes (as noted above), seals on engine, and a few other things
has some goofy ford issues (the a/c works but will not kick on due to a bad controller)
was thinking 2k
but thats negotiable (could probably take off the cost of the struts/tie rods ---- actually that is exactly what I will do)
in part all depends on selling the Z -- but let me know if interested

Chris again call me with these questions you forget we live so close i think. I have a red 94 Acura Integra that would be PERFECT for a winter car. Its front wheel drive, 5-speed, 31 mpg highway. You cant beat all that for 2500. Not to mention its only been serviced in an Acura dealership, new brakes and clutch, in really good mechanical condition.
Give me a call this week to come look at it, see if you like it.

I would go with a Subie, or I had a 85ish Toyota Tercel SR-5 wagon with shift on the fly AWD...man that was unstopable in the snow. I can't wait to beat the snot out of my "new" 1990 Mitsu Galant GS-X this winter either...its all about finding used studded snow tires..they make a world of difference...thinner is better too..wide snow tires suck...
