Q:
Ok, I'm getting my "new" Galant GS-X ready for the winter here in Maine and I'm having a really bad issue with it accelerating under load. It starts great every time, it idles exactly where it should and I can free rev it to red line no problem but when I take it out on the road it revs fine to 3500-4000 rpms and then really starts to sputter and if I floor it it completely stops reving, its like the gas is shut off.
I'm not familiar with this car at all yet so I don't even know where to start. The only thing I can think of is a weak fuel pump because I can really hear it whine when the car is running.

No-Go under load - Check the TPS and MAP. It should have an ECU you can pull codes from.

I'm trying to find out if ther is a way to pull codes without a scanner now, the Galant site I'm looking on isn't good at all...blah.

How someone can have close to 1000 posts and still not know the basics is beyond me.
We can't offer much help without all the information.
Year (you are missing), Make, Model, Engine, How many miles are one it, etc.

:) That helps. Being not familiar with these cars myself I would assume that being the year it does have some sort of code retrival method however which one I'm not sure of. If you go to autozone they usually have a (Haynes) manual that deals with nothing but reading error codes, and explains how to do it on virtually every make and model out there. Sometimes you have to be creative and read between the lines though. For example a 95 chevy prizm is really a toyota corolla but it uses a ecu diag system by suzuki or something like that so you basically have to look at the pictures till you find a picture that shows the right type of connector. Or usually the haynes for your specific car will tell you how to read these codes. BUT if you check engine light hasn't been coming on you won't have a code. Typically pulling codes on these involves jumping two wires (slots on the connector) and using the ignition and key in a specific way.
If you are not getting codes though I would look at alot of things, vacuum lines for one would be my guess, but also distributor, exhaust system, etc. You really need to inspect the whole car starting at the basics.

Well I can pull codes using a volt meter between the ground terminal and the on-board diagnostic terminal so I'll check that out, I've just never had a car with this issue beofre, it just flat out dies when I floor it. I checked vacuum lines and they are all good, I guess I'll check the fuel filter and see if that helps.

that cat could be clogged, could be a fuel problem, have had this happen with a bad distributor before, etc. Does it happen right away when you put it under load? Does it ever get better at any point?

A:
Well the cat is in a dumpster somewhere from the PO, if I ease into the gas it revs way smoother but as soon as I put any pedal into it it dies. The fuel pump is really loud so I think that could be a big contributor,

Well have you tried switching the key to accessory 3-4 times without cranking the motor. Most cars will have a part of the ECU that will give error codes through the check engine light. You should see a couple long blinks, the first number, and short blinks after that ,should be the second number. Keep in mind this will only give you the general error codes. If you want to really narrow it down get a code checker that can check the P codes. I have one and it's one of the best investments I have made.
One thing that stuck out that I have dealt with in the past when reading the story is a full Catalytic. I had a camaro that filled up and would run great sitting, reving, etc. But when I drove it it was like I was dragging a 5 ton load and the engine would just sputter. After replacing the exhaust cat everything was great.
The problem I'm having currently that sounds like this is a leaky injector.
Progress:
Z32 Had to sell for DD 06 Sentra :(
S30 one of these days I will get around to putting it all back together.

sounds like its having trouble underboost check vacuum lines and sensors particularly the maf. Could be anything, if this were a ZXT I would just say reseat the ECU connectors or reset the ECU...
are you sure its called a Galant GSX? I've never heard of a Galant GSX they do have Galant VR-4s that have 2.0 turbo AWD

fuel pump?
i had a blazer that would idle and start normally...but under load it sputters like crazy and if i ease into it its smooth but if i gas it it won't go anywhere...turned out to be faulty fuel pump

my friend's mitsu eclipe 1991 n/a did EXACTLY the same thing!! we both learned to drive a stick shift on that car - we just assumed you were 'supposed' to shift at 3500!
looking back, i think it was probably caused by a bad fuel pump or clogged filter, or possible lots of vacuum leaks (that car always had trouble idleing - idle was either way too high or way too low).
didn't really matter, because the transmission went out after he owned it for a couple years. (these cars are known for bad tranny's).
oh did i mention we killed the clutch like TWICE since we learned to drive a stick on it? we didn't have anybody to teach us!! we thought we were 'really good drivers' if we could get the car to start off in 4th gear!! hahahaha! we fried that clutch sooo bad!

Well I have it narrowed down to a bad fuel pump or the MAF. I checked all of my vacuum lines and 3 were completely rotted through and it was hidden inside a "protective" sleeve. But the thing is that now it wont even free rev to redline, thats what makes me think its the MAF. Now that all the air is measured it runs worse. And yes I am absolutely positive its a Galant GS-X it was a really rare model.
I'm going to do a fuel pressure check as soon as I get home.
