Q:
As of 12/31/06, I will be out of a job. Plant is laying off 356 people, shutting down two divisions, and basically making it a crappy week all around. To make it worse, they require me to work until Dec 29 to receive any severance package at all. I have been there 11 years and we get 4 weeks pay plus a week for every year: Let's just say it will benefit me to work till the 29th and not look for another job till then.
Anybody need a Safety Coordinator with a BS in Chemistry, 10 years lab experience, and 4 years Engineering experience in Eastern SC??????
And yes this is car talk, because the ZX just became a VALUABLE asset since it gets better gas mileage than anything else we own.

Most here head to the oil patch in Calgary/Edmonton, Alberta. Tons of work and good money. Canada exports more oil to the USA than Saudi.. so you'll be helping your country.
I feel for you.. I know what you are going through. Pray and stay positive.

Check all along the Gulf Coast if you're willing to relocate -
consider British Petroleum - they need all the safety they can get.

News blurb about the layoffs

Wellman does sell resin to Bosh (Ford).
Wellman Inc. was at one time the largest PET bottle recycler in the world. Try a Billion lbs of baled bottles on the storage yard at one time in the early 90's.
Wellman took bottles, ground them up and washed them, and extruded the PET into fiber for clothing, fiberfill, etc. Wellman also has an engineered resins division that takes postconsumer carpet and other nylon fiber, adds stuff to it and makes resin for automotive components (radiator fans, intakes, etc.) They su
Being a safety manager sucks. Everybody hates to see you coming. If something happens, it is your fault. If no accidents occur, it is because Mfg is doing a good job. But I am good at it, and I am not ruling anything out.

If you are up for relocation, you could try the RTP area in NC. Lots of biotech/pharma and other companies there and they use safety managers.
I strongly suggest you start looking sooner. The job market can slow down during the holiday season, but picks back up again in Jan. If you already have your name in the hat, it will give you an advantage of being further along in the process than those that wait until after Jan 1st to start looking. Realize that you will have 350+ other folks that will be hitting the street at the same time. Get the jump on them. If you find a company you like and they like you, let them know the situation and negotiate for a start date after the final day of your committment to Wellman. If they really like you, you might be surprised at their flexibility.
I feel your pain and fully understand what you are going through.

Possum25, i am really sorry to hear that you are being laid off. One hat i wear at work is the Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator for our Florida Branch.
I would recomend going to the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) website and if you arent a member, join (I would be happy to sponsor you). The have ALL KINDS of job hunting resources from on-line ads, local chapter meetings, and a publication called Safety Professional that lists recruiters.
I know exactly what you are going through right now and it sucks (putting it mildly).

Hey, hey now I work for BP!
Safety is a big concern with BP, you should look into us. There are usually several dozen jobs scattered around the U.S. for what we call HSSE (health, safety, security, enviroment).

^ 2nd Blue,
Come to Calgary, lots of jobs.
And as a bonus, we don't tend to shoot each other up here either.
All kidding aside, sorry to hear about the lay-off man.
Any man that is willing to put out an honest days work can usually find a decent job in no time.
Good luck to ya.

Best of luck my friend. Keep your head up and all will be fine in the end.

Yeah, I have already started looking. I hope to find something by November, if not I will dig ditches, work on lawnmowers, etc. This is a positive thing though. It was time for me to leave that job, and there is one out there somewhere.
