Q:

You guys remember the post about my Dad's buddy with the Porsche Carrera and BMW M3? Well I borrowed the cars today and will be completely honest. The Porsche has torque but wasn't all that impressed, but the bimmer is SILK! The funny thing is, is now I know why he said my car is fun to drive. I would rather take the Z out on a mobbing between the three. Even the bimmer is too we'll mannered to thrill. Though now I wouldn't mind at all having an M3.

Put the M3 motor in the Z and just put a Nissan valve cover on it. No one will know...

The Carrera is Ass heavy and takes a bit of getting used to. Not a total let down but the 240 and some suspension work, the 240 has it all day with engine work.

But the E36 M3 will kill on a track no doubt! My new favorite car. But to say that a 1972 Datsun is faster with mods than a 1996 Carrera is a definite statement. I was shocked.

What type of Carrera is it (year, etc)? Porsche has used the Carrera name for over 30 years. There's a lot of difference in performance between the various types of Carrera.

The Porsche Type 993, or simply 993 (nine-nine-three or nine-ninety-three), was the version of Porsche's 911 model produced from late 1993 through early 1998, replacing the 964. Its discontinuation marked the end of air-cooled Porsches, giving it a special place in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts.

I know what you mean. I have a 2004 RX8 that sits in my garage most of the time. I bought it new and it just turned over 29K.
I have a 1977 280 that I drive everyday! I also have a nice little 99 Tracker 4X4 and again, I drive the Z car!
Don't know what it is, but I would rather drive the Z than the RX8. I also had a 93 300ZX and again, I like the 77 better.
Must be smelling the oil and gas and the rattles etc. Think it is mostly listening to the exhaust and being able to feel the car.
As everyone knows, Z's are a sickness. My 1st Z was a 1975 I bought in 1976, then I bought a new 79, left the Z world until 93, bought a new 300ZX, sold it and bought the RX8 (big mistake) The Mazda is a really nice car but it is really too tame. Fast but boring compared to the Z.

M3 over a Porsche. No way! The M3 may feel silky in comparison, but they dont compare to a street machine Porsche in performance. What year Porsche? I have been in the slightly old school ones and in a newer style one. The new ones are stiff, and they are solid. I dunno' about motor performance, but chassi and brakes are far better in a Porsche, and would be supprised if the M3 is any better in the motor department. If you are not thinking about money when comparing a 240 to a Porsche, then there is no comparison. You can though with a lot less money get a Z close in performance with a stock Porsche, and even get it more hp. But if you soup up a Porsche, it will be better.
A:

Yeah, but lightweight generally works out to a more fun driving car and the early Z's were light compared to today's boats!

It definitely had a lot to do with the weight. The Porsche had a little more grunt than the Z...but only a little and was a pretty boring drive though a very sexy one, solid, predictable, and uneventful, other than right out of the hole in first gear at full throttle. It's geared a little too long to really make it interesting. The M3 was just a very well balanced car and much more rewarding to drive fast, close ratio, very revvy, and good weight balance. The Z is, well you know what a modified 240Z is like, loud, harsh, smelly, lean, and all business. The Porsche is a 1993 and the M3 is a 1997. I wouldn't mind at all finding out what a Porsche Turbo can do though...I don't know anyone who has spent the $100,000+ to find out.

ah' Turbo schmerbo'... Their best model is a N/A, IMO (the 911 GT3). Making 415hp stock. And a Porsche is probably very light when stripped down.

One day I'll have an e36 M3 as a daily and the turbo 240Z as the weekend warrior.
Power wise the 993 and the M3 are pretty close and they weigh almost the same but the M3 has slightly more peak torque and at a lower RPM than the porsche.
