It's only blasphemy if after the paint you cover it with racing stickers. Unless it's a track car... then nothing's blasphemy. Keep us posted with pics.

What colors did the ZXR's come in stock? Only black?

Excuse my ignorance but what's the difference between a 79 zxr and a 280z or zx?

They only came in silver mist ( blueish silver)
The difference is the zxr wing, and decal kit on a base model car ( no power steering, windows etc.. it only has AC
The thing that makes it rare is the fact that only 1000 have been produced... and how many of those are still left ? not rotted .. or painted in a different color?
The problem is as i am repainting already.. it is not oem anyway..
so I'm leaning to the stock yellow color the zx came with or green ... i always like non metallic basic colors on them.. it makes them look more 70's than metallicy 80's..
That said i don't like silver on a zx ...it makes the lines blend in so to speak ...
+ remaking those stickers will cost an arm and a leg here ... witch do not make the car any faster ...
if i repaint in different color it will be 'just' a 79 ZX with a zxr wing ....

I'd say if you were in it for the investment, or to sell it, paint it original. If not, paint it with pink polka dots if that's what you like.

Personally, I think it would be a shame to see it painted another color other than original just for the simple fact that it is so rare and hard to find anymore. Just MHO.

If you paint it a different color and ditch the stripes, it's not really a ZXR anymore, is it?
It's your car, but I'd like to see it keep original paint.
As far as the suspension, engine, wheels, etc. goes...I say mod the crap out of it!

Amazing what emotion a simple wing and $20 worth of hokey striping on an otherwise stock ZX can elicit. Numbers matching? You'd think it was a Hemi Cuda convertible.

Frank, are they numbered, and if so what number do you have does it say? Just wondering.

A:
K, you guys changed my mind... yes Frank, go with the original color scheme. (I had forgotten you already have a yellow ZX) If it was yellow it would just be a yellow ZX with a ZXR wing. Repaint the original color scheme and you have a repainted original ZXR. Maybe not a big difference, but it's so special, you should emphasize that.

and i agree with the guys earlier, maybe repaint the stripes under the clear instead of stickers.

A:
It's only "special" if it's absolutely pristine and un-repainted (same as a Zappp or a black pearl "package). Repaint it and "bam!" it's indistinguishable from any other rolling chassis that was refurbed with the package added.
A:
well i kind of agree with hybrid here .. it is a fairly unmolested rust free zxr with only 47K but advantage of stock color is that i have no need to repaint the engine bay door sills , etc... As paint there is still in good shape .. the outside just went dull by the good ol calli sunshine.

A professional restoration shop could do a lot with your original paint. I'd have to park and store it though, cause I really can't stand the way they look. But that is just my opinion, just like I don't like red or yellow cars. Few pull it off well and it's usually an extra good quality paint job that makes the difference. Like Sexual Sushi's new 240 - that's a good looking yellow car.
A:
well not on this paint it started cracking and by now is sanded down anyway ;)
I need someone in the states with a zxr to remake the stickers as it would be way cheaper there .. plus they have a good mold... Not modding it it runs like new, shifts like no datsun i have shifted before!..
Keep in mind i have two fairly modded cars as is .. so it would be good to have a stock car .. all i will change is the use of a MSA header and different exhaust.. as i don't want to register the car with a cat or EGR, i will swap the ecu for a euro one when i have it on a dyno .. lets break that myth! .. as they are not obligatory here, nor did euro cars come with them !! and i have a coated header ready to go on..
Haha should paint the car orange ;)
