The Old Z rules the street class tonight...

General Chat

Q:

Well, I finally hit the track tonight after abstaining for the last three months.I raced 15 times and came away undefeated...not counting the few red lights of course...haha
Although I'm not as fast as I once was, I was still the fastest street car out at the Farmington track tonight.
As far as real potential competition goes, there were Five Mustang GT's, Two Camaro Z28's, two WRX STI's,one Neon SRT4,three Turbo CRX's, an S2000 and a few other odd ball cars.
Fastest of the bunch was the Turboed CRX at 8.68 @ 82.3 mph.
My best run of the night on regular street tires was only an 8.53 @ 83.667 mph with a 1.96 60ft. I'm slower by about 2 tenths and 1 mph from what I used to run back in 2004.
The 3.54 rear end is hurting me off the line as my best 60 ft. of the night with street tires was only a 1.90 whereas I could pull 1.81's with the old 3.9 rear end and street tires.
My modifications I did this spring obvioulsy didn't produce the HP increases I had hoped for unfortunately. I am probably down at least 7-10 HP.
I believe the extra porting I did around the valve guides opened the ports up too much and weakened the venturi effect you get with a slight narrowing of the port before entering the bowl area. Also since I failed to notch the block for extra valve clearance(Laziness is my only excuse) on the replacement block that it could have hurt HP potential as well. The crank scraper I installed probably isn't doing much good either.
Unfortunately like every other night spent drag racing this year I didn't come away unscathed. On my FINAL run the shifter tightened up which means another Main Shifter Rod failure is a future event waiting to happen. Depending on whether the rod breaks in the front or the rear of the fork could mean more tranny work either this week or sometime in the not too distant future.
I think this is the 6th tailhousing Shifter Rod that I have broken!!! What can I say... I shift REALLY HARD and FAST!! haha
All in all though it was a great night and I still had a lot of fun watching the cars that I had just beaten line up behind me on the next run instead of beside me!!! LOL
Old Skool Z's can still get the job done!!!

"The crank scraper I installed probably isn't doing much good either."
I think you are better with it than without it!
Good to see you back at the track. NOW DON'T BREAK IT and enter the HotRod Shootout at Maxton next spring!
LOL

"Two Camaro Z28's, two WRX STI's,one Neon SRT4,three Turbo CRX'"
i thought all these cars were supposed to be "really fast" like 12 sec 1/4 miles, which is about what your z does, right?
how come you're the fastest - i'm guessing driving skill and experience?

Maybe experience plays a big part as I have been racing at the track for 12 years now and most of the competition wasn't even old enough to have driven more than ten years all together.
Also, most people tend NOT to drive quite as hard as I do!! haha

Also, the Turbo cars really shine in the 1/4 mile and not so much in the 1/8 mile.

None of those cars mentioned above at Infineon run in the 12's in stock form and most of them dont run in the 12's modded either in my last couple years there watching them. I have on ocassion seen a couple 12 second ones but they are very rare indeed and even slower on the street.

Because
"Camaro Z28's, WRX STI's, Neon SRT4, & Turbo CRX's" SUCK!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!
That's a SAFE BET! Nobody here to start defense flames against that one!

I saw a WRX turn 113mph in the 1/8 up at Irwindale.....smoking all four tires the whole distance!!!
It was more of a show for the fans. They were working on getting the launch right, and anything after that was a show!

Yeah, I have seen some MEAN WRX's but these two at the track tonight were obviously bone stock becasue they were only turning 8.8-8.9 at 81-82 mph
The Honda S2000 IS A BIG JOKE on the dragstrip. I have seen 6 of them at the track over the last year and NOT ONE has run below a 10.05.

Yeah I am just a little dissappointed after all that extra work I reaped no gains.
Of course maybe colder weather will help unleash the beast within. I don't record temps on my old timeslips so it's possible when I ran the 8.34 @ 84.5 mph at Farmington that it was colder than crap out. I have been goning through all my old tmeslips and many of the runs are identical or even slower than tonight's run so I might not be off as much as I tiink especially since I have quite a bit less gearing off the line with the 3.54.
Farmington track elevation is about 1300 ft. so it would run a tenth quicker and a mph faster at the 300ft. elevation at Rockingham.
If I can keep her all together, I'd like to try and make a trip back down to the 1/4 mile track since I haven't been in over 2 years.

The S2000 on a drag strip is like running an F1 car against a top fueler. Not designed or setup for it at all, I'd still take one since they are very fun on any road that isn't straight.

Hows the 3.54 affect the top end pull compared to the 3.90?
Matt
A:

Hey Matt, I picked up about .4 mph compared to the 3.9 which is to be expected, but it defintely is hurting my ET. Also if I had slicks it definitely would be much slower out of the hole, but I haven't run slicks in years and don't plan to this year either so that is why I went ahead and put in the 3.54. The 3.54 definitely offers a better gear range for the street and passing on the interstate though.
