Bumper Shops in L.A.

General Chat

Q:

Guys, I had posted some stuff in the past from an Alzheimer's Viewpoint.
The place to get the bumpers done in L.A. (downtown) that I was referring to was NOT "L.A. Bumper" but "California Bumper" and the guy you want to talk with is "BOB"
Straightening and standard chroming is around $200 per bumper now, and triple chrome plating (show quality) is around $300.
From my dealings with their standard work, it's 100% better than new OEM Chrome.
Just thought I should get that out there for the guys who were asking.

try faith Plating in hollywood on santa monica last one I did on a 78 front was $50 thru a body shop

When I did my Corvair Bumpers in 1995, it was $165!!! (Through a body shop) What kind of chrome job are you geting for $50. And how long ago was it done for that price???
That is WAAAAY low for the market, and I would be suspect of it!
This company I am talking about is known good, and that price includes straightening of just about any bumper in any condition. Like wrapped around a tree, for instance. It looks better than new.
If you could see some of the stuff they fixed, to better than new, you wouldn't believe it.
Generally they have a "minimum" charge that goes by weight. And for most chrome shops, that is usually $150!

I got a MICROSCOPICALLY THIN chrome plating on my bar over the rear bumper at this place called Supreme Plating. It was so THIN that when I bumped it with something, it tore off the chrome off in a 1.5"patch!. It looked .002" thick!! Their first three phone numbers are 671. (Not the area code.) If you see me at the car show, I can peel back the K&N sticker and show you the evidence. They wanted $400 each to do ONE bumper. I HAD to drive away. Now the chrome has almost yellowed due to it's poor coverage....SO Tony, this was a great idea to post this because I have been sending all my parts, to be plated, to Texas. "Practical Z", Eric. He's great but I wouldn't want to send him a bumper in the mail. LA's a big place with about 50 phone books. It helps to find out "who's hot and who's NOT." Norm K

Someone benefitted from my post!
Cool!
I knew someone could use the information. Been several inquiries in the past year, so thought it was a good bet to post it.
How the hell I got "L.A. Bumper" from "California Bumper" is beyond me!
I had a feeling it wasn't right, someone else local asked me and redid my legwork consulting my original source, and it was confirmed:
"California Bumper" or "Cal Bumper", and Bob is the man you want to talk with! Bob Da Man!
Their triple-chrome show plating is amazing. To see the twisted junk they have fixed at a local "Big Show" in April reinforced their work.

That's the info I have been looking for. I have been looking, calling and inquiring about good chrome shops in Los Angeles. I have 8 bumpers needing some straightening and rechroming. I guess patience has some virtues after all. I've been driving around with my dinged up front bumper for sometime. The rear I took off earlier this Summer. for a rechrome, but decided to wait.
