Not a big surprise. Once the cold weather sets in, we'll get 10-20 posts a week about smelling fuel and "wondering" if anything is wrong. If I smelled fuel, I would IMMEDIATELY shut the car off and not start it except if it was mandatory for trouble shooting.
Half the time people start off by saying "I smelled gas when I started it, so I decided to go on a cross-country adventure followed by racing it at Leguna Seca and finished it off with 87 street races anyways" "I was going for 100 but the gas fumes started getting to me" "Think something is wrong?"

One reason EVERY vehicle I own has an extinguisher in it. Looks kinda ricey with a bottle bolted behind the seats in the 280ZX, and it may not do any good but its better than pi$$ing on the fire.

Yeah all my fuel lines on my Z32 were cracked and the clamps were loose. Luckily I was at SilverTwin's house and he noticed something I never would have.

Wow that's really bad, although it's his own fault for not having a fire extinguisher in the car. All EFI cars should have one in my opinion, high pressure + fuel leak + heat = bad....

For whatever the reason, I too went out a few weeks ago and purchased fire extinguishers for my Zs. Hope it is not a premonition. Either way, I'm with Possum 25 as it beats standing there watching your ride go up in flames.

Possibly an alternator fire. I had that happen to my Tbird one time. Thankfully my wife pulled over where a bystander HAD a fire extinguisher!

Man! Talk about tough luck.
I was in Bakerfield driving my 1970 around earlier this summer, it was about 115 degrees, my car stutters. I pull off the side of the road in a parking lot, and opened the hood. Turn off the electric fuel pump. Thought it was vapor locked Let it sit a bit. Turned on the fuel pump and tried starting it. Wouldn't start. Let the fuel pump keep running thinking the fuel running through the rails would cool it. Started to smell fuel, looked under the car and saw a nice puddle of fuel dripping from the air cleaner. Tried starting it, the carbs hiccuped and a nice flame shot out of the air cleaner. Then a nice flame just bounced around at the air cleaner inlet. I run to the hatch, and grab a shop rag and stuff it in the air cleaner to put out the flame.
Real close call.
Funny thing is, it started up about 15 minutes later and I drove back home about 100 miles with no problems.

I too carry an extinguisher, it was only $12 from home depot and I feel the piece of mind is worth it. I've been told that its only good for small fires, but I suppose something is better than nothing.
On discovery's biker build-off a few weeks ago one of the rider's bikes caught fire. He was watching it burn on the side of the freeway. Does that mean nobody driving past had an extinguisher? Not one person in the tv crew, mechanic team, or even passer-by truckers? They had to wait for the police.... squirt squirt it was out. Unbelievable!
If you don't carry one now, please go out and buy one. You never know when you- or someone else- might need it!

Outside of slightly shrinking hoses its just more noticeable in colder weather as the gas does not evaporate as quickly.
This whole world smells bad, I'd buy another if I had
back what I paid for another mother@#$%@# in a motorcade
A:

the OEM fuel clamps are about worthless. As the weather gets cold the fuel lines tend to shrink just a bit causing leakage at the connections. I have a Pathfinder, Maxima and Z32, and each year every one would leak at various connections when the weather got cold. I finally replaced every OEM clamp with aftermarket clamps and the problem went away.
