Hi folks,
Just been crazy busy lately and forgot to bring in all my paint products from the garage last night. It got down to 33 so the weatherman says. Most of the paint products have a warning on them that reads, "Do not allow to freeze." Does that mean actual freeze or freezing temperatures? They will be in tonight but what do you think? Is this stuff any good anymore? Thanks.

Unlikely that if outdoor temp was 33 that it got that cold inside the garage, especially if daytime temp was well above that. Should still be okay. But I would gather them up and get them inside soon.

yeah its still fine..I think they probably mean "do not let this crap freeze solid"....33 is not cold enough to even freeze water actually..water may start to freeze technically as crystals at about 40 degrees but water won't freeze solid until it gets about 29 or so...I would imagine the paint compounds would have a much lower freezing point

Take the stuff and put it in the house to come up to room temperature. After it's warmed open up and check to make sure no changes have taken place.
Store in a warmer place away from spark or open flame.
Are we going to see the finished product soon?

I've had a water pump housed in a pump house for years. It doesn't get cold enough to freeze unless it's several degrees below 32 & stays there. Any small amount of heat (light, radiation from house etc) will raise the temp several degrees. A detached, unheated open garage will be colder than attached, insulated. 33 isn't freezing so I'd expect that you're good this time.
Anyone can drive a new car.

Water freezes at 32F, 33 is above freezing so it didn't freeze. Also, solvents can sometimes have a lower freezing temp than water. I would not let it stay out in the garage all winter, but your garage inside will take a while to get to 32 usually. If oyu have big drafts or an open door, then it will get colder faster. My detatched 2 car garage will be about 5-7 degrees above the outside temp if I don't have the furnace running. I like to leave it at about 45 all winter though.

Never heard of freeze damage to paint (but in SoCal, you don't have to worry about much of anything freezing). Is this water based paint? Just curious.

Thanks folks,
The paint is coming in tonight. I usually do this much earlier in the season. JR, it is not water based paint just the regular Dupont stuff. Actually, high dollar stuff. Thanks again.

it should be fine . ive stored water based and oil based paint in my garage for years and it has gotten very cold . to the point where pop in refer in the garage froze and exploded and the paint was fine. it has also got cold enough in the garage to freeze water in bottles solid and the paint was still good, so one time and only to 33 outside should not affect your paint at all.

I have always kept my paint supplies out in the garage all year and they work unless they are really old. I would think it would have to be REALLY cold to freeze solvent based paint. Paul
